Objective. What is he Geography of Health and Health Risks? http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2012/dec/13/how-people-die-global-mortality-visualised http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2012/dec/13/how-people-die-global-mortality-visualised There is no such thing as a global map of good health, but longer life expectancy is a consequence of a healthy population Your task – use the resources and links provided to differentiate your work on ‘global variations in health spatially and temporally’ and produce a revision tool

What sub-questions do we have to ask to get our answer?

Globally, around 57 million people die each year. Almost 15% of these deaths occur in children under the age of 5. Most of these preventable deaths in children occur in low- and middle-income countries. Age standardized death rate per 100 000 of the population WHO (2008 figures) Where do people die?

Where do people survive? WHOWHO interactive map of life expectancy. In 2011 there are 19 countries with a life expectancy over 80 years. Japan topping the table. UAE profile at www.who.int/countries/are/en/ Life expectancy

When Chris Murray, now director of the UW’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, and his colleague Alan Lopez did the first “Global Burden” study back in 1990, it’s fair to say they transformed the way we look at disease and health. One of the primary products of the Murray-Lopez collaboration was the DALY, or “disability adjusted life year,” measurement that they believe more accurately portrays the impact of health and disease. http://www.who.int/healthinfo/global_burden_disease/GBD_2005_study/en/index.html http://www.who.int/healthinfo/global_burden_disease/GBD_2005_study/en/index.html Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs)

Task………..Objective. What is the Geography of Health and Health Risks? http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2012/dec/13/how-people-die-global-mortality-visualised http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2012/dec/13/how-people-die-global-mortality-visualised There is no such thing as a global map of good health, but longer life expectancy is a consequence of a healthy population Your task – use the resources and links provided to differentiate your work on ‘global variations in health spatially and temporally

Resources... World Health Organisation WHO The Gapminder Foundation gapminder.org Video sites: You Tube, Vimeo and Horizonsbusiness.com 2 textbooks Geography alltheway http://www.worldmapper.org/

If I was doing it… 1) go through each slide and comment on pattern – name places and patterns and numbers – spatially and temporally 2) browse the resources on offer 3) choose at least three more things to add to help give a ‘geography of global health World Health Organisation WHO The Gapminder Foundation gapminder.org Video sites: You Tube, Vimeo and Horizonsbusiness.com 2 textbooks Geography alltheway http://www.worldmapper.org/

Task - Is there a link to pollution…? Mapping Pollution your turn…. how might we do this?

Theories and Models I’m never sure if you can model theses issues but some people have tried…. Task - What do you reckon to them? Eg China and diabetes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXBWQs8y4KU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXBWQs8y4KU
