The brain and the body can be thought of as a coordinated unit The brain supports all motor function Brain and muscles work together to move the body and manipulate objects The Child Is a Mind/Body

At birth, 100 billion brain cells communicate through tiny connections that form networks There are 15,000 connections for each brain cell The brain has as many possible connecting patterns as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy By age three, 80% of the connections are already made, forming BODY & BRAIN networks for movement Early Brain Connections

What controls a child’s: sense of balance motion awareness ability move in shared space? Vestibular System

The vestibular system is the most fully developed sense organ at birth Howard Gardner: musical intelligence is the capacity to think in music, hear patterns, and respond to them Maryann Harman: summarizes important research regarding the connection between music, movement, and language development Many kindergarten students cannot keep a steady beat; this ability should be in place by 2 to 3 years of age Music and Movement Instrumental in Language Development http://www.earlychildhoodnews.com/earlychildhood/article_view.aspx?ArticleID=601

Poor motor performance linked to poor academic skills Date: October 28, 2013 Source: University of Eastern Finland Summary: Children with poor motor performance at school entry were found to have poorer reading and arithmetic skills than their better performing peers during the first three years of school. However, no relationship was found between cardiovascular fitness and academic skills, according to a new study. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/10/131028114551.htm

Oxygen: The brain requires more oxygen than any other organ of the body because of its high rate of metabolism Lack of oxygen impairs learning and attention MVPA is needed to pump blood to transport oxygen to the brain 6 years old Fuel the Brain with MVPA: Feeling Down, Move Around

The bodies of children are 65% water; however, their brains are 85% water A child’s brain needs water throughout the day to function properly Because children metabolize faster than adults, they can become dehydrated faster than adults 6 years old Water Their Brains

Glucose: Primary source of energy for the brain The brain of a 4- to 5-year-old uses twice as much glucose as an adult A healthy balance of fruits, veggies, and whole grains supplies glucose to the developing brain 6 years old Nourish the Brain Omega-3’s Building block of myelin needed to coat nerve pathways

Data from Dr. John Ratey These slides are used worldwide by Dr. John Ratey of Harvard University and author of SPARK to show the existing research correlating fitness to academic achievement and reduction of behavior related issues in schools. John J. Ratey, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, research synthesizer, speaker, and best selling author. An internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry, Dr. Ratey has published over 60 peer reviewed articles, and 8 books published in 14 languages www.johnratey.com Dr. Ratey lecture of the book is at URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x6fxL_KVlA AMAZON -Kindle $9.99; Paperback; hardcover (new edition January 2013)

The Naperville Phenomenon In the fall of 2005, this elementary school had PE one day per week of 50 minutes. This year Jan-June 2006 a PE4life Program was offered five days a week at 45 minutes. The changes are remarkable. This is an inner city school with 80% of kids on free lunch program, mostly Hispanic and African American heritage. The PE4LIFE added elements were cardiac monitored watches, Dance Revolution, a few exercise bicycles, and a small number of fitness machines. Mostly what was added was a new attitude.

Produces Results… PE4life Programs help Reduce Disciplinary Incidents! Major reduction of disciplinary issues in Woodland Elementary, (KCMO) site of a PE4life program 1177 392 228 94 66% reduction 59% reduction “PE4life has had a tremendous influence on the lives of our students. Students are also more motivated throughout the day, their enthusiasm is way up, and the discipline issues are way down”. Craig Rupert, Principal, Woodland Elementary School

Suspensions By Month Suspensions by Month/Year - Charleston Progressive Academy Average # Suspensions/Month Before Program: 14 Average # Suspensions/Month After Program: 3

Johannes Skolen Copenhagen, Denmark The intervention lasted 3 months. We increased the school PE from once a week to 5 times a week. 250 students Moved away from ball play only to a large array of activities from running, to hip hop dance, aerobics, spinning, indoor rowing, and military boot camp training. We also offered after school activities every day. We also changed the school food to nothing but healthy “ super foods ” and removed all junk food. A 38% decrease in absenteeism. We measured concentration ability and it improved 33%. Teachers also reported great effects on classroom behavior. There was also a profound increase in grades, with an average of 1.5 grade improvement across the board. The partners where the Institute for Human Physiology, Copenhagen University, Chris MacDonald, and Danmarks Radio (TV DR 1).
