Home to many different people groups: Fijians, Indians, Europeans, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders. Tropical climate.

3 3 of 14 Geo_Y03_U2_SS_ComparingPlaces Settlements in Fiji Suva An island village The capital and largest city of Fiji is Suva. Other smaller cities of Fiji are Nadi and Lautoka. However, six out of 10 people in Fiji live in rural settlements. Fiji is made up of more than 300 islands. About 100 of these islands have only small coastal villages. Other islands are too difficult to reach, or lack fresh water.

4 4 of 14 Geo_Y03_U2_SS_ComparingPlaces Major industries in Fiji Fiji has an abundance of forests, minerals and fish resources. Two major industries are sugarcane farming and tourism. Other industries include fishing and coconut harvesting.

Lies more than 2000km southeast of Australia. 76 th largest country in the world in terms of land area. Made up of the North and South Islands: the total land size of the country is a little bigger than the state of Victoria in Australia. Most people are of European heritage (mainly British), but there are also large numbers of Maoris, as well as people from the Pacific Islands and Asia. Temperate climate.

Auckland, the largest city with the biggest population (more than one million people), is the centre of industry, business and international transportation. Largely an English-speaking country, made up of migrants from all around the world. Small population of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Climate is mostly arid (desert), but is tropical in the north and temperate in the south.

With most of its population living in urban areas, Australia is one of the world's most urbanised countries. Most of the population live in capital cities and towns along the coastlines. Their population is usually small and they often don’t get access to all of the same services as people who live in the cities. Trains and road trains are used to transport resources, including live animals, from rural areas in Australia. The roads are often straight and long.

12 12 of 14 Geo_Y03_U2_SS_ComparingPlaces Industries in Australia The main industries of Australia are mining, agriculture and tourism. Australia is rich in a variety of natural resources, such as coal, iron and copper. Sheep, cattle, grain and fruit crops are the main agricultural industries. Industrial manufacturing (for example: transportation equipment, food processing and steel) is also important.
