2 Fact We know something is a fact when: the information is presented in a way that doesn’t show us what the writer thinks. the information tells us something about the person, place or event, without telling us what the writer thinks. For example: The ship had room for over 100 pirates. The pirates all wore green hats. There were over 1000 gold coins on the ship.

3 Opinion We know something is an opinion when: the information is presented in a way that shows us what the writer thinks. The information tells us what the writer thinks about the person, place or event. For example: The ship was very large and beautiful. The pirates all wore ugly hats and old, smelly uniforms. There were many wonderful treasures on the ship.

4 The Great Pirate Roberts Read the text. Then fill in the chart on the next slide. The Great Pirate Roberts’ real name was Bartholomew Roberts. He was a pirate in the early 1700s in North and South America. Everyone was scared of him. He was very mean. Roberts wore funny clothes. He liked his red jacket the most. He always wore a hat with a red feather that looked very strange. He was a tall man. He was very good-looking. He was very brave and liked to surprise people by doing strange things. One time he sailed his ship into a port ( נמל ) while the men on his ship were playing the drums and the trumpets very loudly. What a crazy idea! He always had two guns with him and he liked to fight. He won many fights in his life, but he died at sea near Africa.
