3  Interview witnesses  Establish control  Make contact with first responders  Check for safety hazards

4  Determine the Origin  Find out who was last to leave the scene of the incident  Determine if the fire was natural or an accidental cause ◦ Types of natural causes:  gas leak, electrical system, sunlight, smoking, etc…

5  Document the place of origin  Take photos of origin and the damange location  Take written notes of the scene  Sketch the scene

6  Collect & preserve evidence  Prevent contamination ◦ Wear gloves ◦ Use new materials to package evidence  Package, label, & data evidence ◦ Package items so they will not be damaged during transportation

7  Document how the scene appears upon release  Make sure all evidence has been taken from the scene  Submit report to appropriate departments
