4 Introduction “The Romantic Writers.” Romantics saw the city as a place of moral corruption, poverty, and death.

7 Washington Irving > First American fiction writer to receive international fame-perfected the short story > Born in New York of wealthy parents-1783 (died 1859) > Wrote The Legend Of Sleeping Hallow and Rip Van Winkle > Popularized the word “Gotham” to describe New York—later used in Batman and the word “knickerbockers” to describe New Yorkers.

9 Indirect Characterization: The author tells you about the character’s personality through physical description, his/her thoughts, words, actions, or through other characters’ comments For example: Steve left just enough for the tip, despite the fact that the waitress was really good.
