How would you categorize most of the causes of stress in your life? 3. What is your personality type? (A or B) And what does that mean? 4. How do you react to stress? 5. How do you cope with stress?

6 3 Stages of Stress #1=ALARM STAGE Body releases adrenaline, which gives you a burst of energy. HR increases, increased blood flow to muscles, breathing rate increases, blood pressure increases, digestive system slows Your body has two options FIGHT or FLIGHT Fight: Stand and fight the stressor Flight: Run from the stressor

7 3 Stages of Stress #2=Resistance Stage If body cannot fight or flight it attempts to recover from the alarm stage Body becomes fatigued and less able to deal with stress

8 3 Stages of Stress #3=Exhaustion Stage Stressor continues Body becomes warn down, no longer able to fight off the stressor Body is susceptible to illness This stage does not occur in every stressful situation, only in situations lasting for for prolonged periods of time (weeks, months, or years)

10 Recognize Stress PHYSICAL: Muscle tension, headache, upset stomach, pounding heart, shortness of breath MENTAL: Anger, irritability, impatience, nervousness, forgetfulness, negative thinking BEHAVIORAL: Loss of appetite, overeating, drug abuse, sleep problems, fidgeting

11 Relieving Stress Responsibly manage your time, being too busy is often a big source of stress for teens- To-Do Lists! Exercise! A great stress relief tool! Get plenty of rest and eat well. You'll be able to handle stress better when your body is fully energized! Foster healthy relationships and talk to friends, family members, or trusted adults about your stressors When stress hits big, take a time-out. A few minutes away from the problem can help. Do something you enjoy like reading, surfing the web, or listening to music! Diaphragmatic, deep, breathing! Ask for help! If you feel like you are having difficulty dealing with the stress, ask for assistance from a friend, trusted adult, family member, counselor, etc. SOURCE: “Stress: You can handle it “
