Good Morning!!!! 1.Motives for Imperialism Presentations 2.Justifying Imperialism Essential Question: What were the main motives for Imperialism?

Our Question… WHY did Western countries (Britain, U.S., France, Germany, etc.) decide to start taking over the world’s other countries (China, Africa, etc.)? What were the motives for Imperialism? Motive: Reason to start, ambitions or needs,

Motives for Imperialism Groups Exploratory – Erin – Isaias – Camila Ideological – Shannon – Lina – Yiming – Rhonne Political – Jackson – John – Harvey – Run Religious – Crissa – Eunchae – Pavel – Carlos Military – Sonam – Bishal – Jonathan – Sahba

Economic Motives New Markets – European countries now produce more things than they can buy because of industrialization – Need to gain control of new markets for their goods, so they conquer non-industrialized nations!

Exploratory Motivations Exploring to control new plants, animals, and peoples – Explorers: a person that goes some place no one has gone – Medicinal: something that helps cure disease – Scientific: scientists using data to figure out new things David Livingstone explored new lands – Use plants to find new medicines for diseases – Led to imperialism because people wanted to find new medicines that could help Europe and also new resources

Political Motives Political: what is happening in a government or country Nationalism = be proud of your country and things that come from your country – Europe competing to be the “best” country – Conquer more lands to show how good they are – Both sides believe they are the best, and they want to prove it through competition Leads to Imperialism because countries want to become stronger and show they are stronger

Military Motives Countries want new land to protect their land – Want new land to expand their navies – Want new land to maintain their navies Strategic: something needed to achieve a goal Army: fight on land Navy: fight on the water Leads to Imperialism because countries are afraid of being conquered by other strong countries, so want to improve their land and navy to protect their country

Religious Motives Missionaries: people go to africa to teach natives and preach Christianity Convert: change people from one religion to a new religion (Christianity) – Change beliefs of native Africans Religion: belief in the power of God – Christians force Africans to become their religion – Sometimes they treat Africans well – Europeans believed Christianity was BETTER and would heal/help/save the natives Leads to imperialism because Europe wanted to share its “better” religion with Africa

Ideological Motives Ideological: a set of beliefs that influences what people think – Europeans think they are better than other people, they think they are the best – Social Darwinism: belief European civilization has “evolved” to be superior to all others! RACIST: treat other races unfairly and sometimes violently Europe should bring their civilization to all other places because it is better – Europe should HELP OTHERS become LIKE THEM (Western Civilization) Imperialism = Europe thinks they are stronger and better so they conquer others and think they are helping! Natives don’t think so, natives think they are doing fine by themselves!

Motives Spectrum Which factors/motives were most justified? Which were least justified?. – Justified: something you can defend or explain as right or fair – Factors: Economic, Religious, Political, Exploratory, Military, Ideological Most Justified ________________________________________ Least Justified
