5 Etienne Brule explored the area around the Susquehanna River in 1615. He was the first European in what is now Pennsylvania.

7 In 1616, Cornelius Hendrickson sailed up the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River.

8 Explorers recorded their observations by drawing maps and writing in journals.

9 Many Europeans who first came to the area of what is now Pennsylvania traded with Native Americans for fur, mainly beaver pelts.

10 Cornelius Hendrickson started a fur trading post near present-day Philadelphia.
