2 Spanish Colonial Timeline
1772 Efforts to Christianize the Native Americans fails. San Antonio, the largest settlement becomes the capital. 1682 Spaniards establish the first Texas mission at Corpus Cristi de la Ysleta. 1716 Spanish establish six missions and one presidio in East Texas. 1718 Founding of San Antonio. Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) is founded. 1690 Father Damian Massanet sets up the first Spanish mission in East Texas.

Convinced the viceory of New Spain to colonize East Texas and convert the Caddoes to Catholicism Founder of the first Spanish mission in East Texas Mission San Francisco de los Tejas Due to a lack of interest by the Native Americans to convert to Catholicism and many dying from disease the mission was abandoned. Helped colonize the “Land of the Tejas” along the Neches River Mission Santa Maria

Who’s who……. Father Francisco Hidalgo Spanish Missionary Priest at Mission San Francisco de los Tejas Contacted French Catholic priests to provide religious services to the local native people when Spanish preists aren’t available Caused Spanish to be suspicious of French colonization

7 Who’s who…….. Jose de Escandon
Military commander and governor of Nuevo Santander (present-day Laredo) Led Spain’s expansion effort in South Texas Sent settlers, soldiers and priests to settle the lands between the Rio Grande and Nueces River establishing 15 missions, presidios, and settlements Moved La Bahia mission and presidio from the Guadalupe River to the present-day Goliad Jose de Escandon

Who’s who….. Spanish Franciscan priest Founded several missions in East Texas including Nuestra Senorade los Dolores and San Miguel de los Adaes Due to problems in East Texas, he moved to San Antonio and founded San Jose y San Miguek de Aguayo, one of the five missions in San Antonio today Antonio Margil de Jesus

Place Names Amarillo – In Spanish it means yellow. This was the color of the area soil and the beautiful wildflowers. Named by early settlers in this area. Rio Grande – In Spanish it means “Big River”. Most Texas rivers and landforms Vocabulary Vaquero – Spanish word for cowboy Rodeo – A sport that is based on the skills of vaqueros Religion Roman Catholic Architecture Hacienda – Home Presidio – Fort Aceqias – Wells Adobe – Brick Arch – style of architecture Food Tortillas – Flat bread made of corn Tamales – Dumpling made of corn, flour, and meat
