Outreach Methods and their Uses

What is Outreach? the process of engaging with individuals and organizations in order to educate and raise awareness Goals: – Promoting and raising awareness about our campaign and the issues involved – Promoting a particular event – Recruiting new volunteers/organizers – Getting petition signatures

OUTREACH 1 on 1 Techniques Group Techniques Class Talks Tabling Mobile Tabling Petitioning Other Ice Cream Talks Post-It Notes

Class Talks Giving a short (<1 min) presentation at the start of a class Advantages Disadvantages Reaches a huge audience of people Relatively low preparation required Fast Not much room to engage audience or gauge interest levels Very limited time frame - audience gets rowdy quickly

How to give a Class Talk Enter class (lecture) a few minutes early Greet professor and request to make a short announcement to the class Write the CIJIC website and other relevant details on the blackboard Give the presentation and encourage the class to get involved and learn more TIPS: Talk with energy and enthusiasm Talk loudly! CIJIC has a general class talks script you can use (and modify to suit the situation)

Tabling Standing at/near a table with promo materials and engaging pedestrians in conversation Advantages Disadvantages Content flexible based on individuals’ interest level/reaction Can reference and give away promo materials Can sign individuals up on the spot for emails/petition/to get involved Reaches a very small number of people Time-intensive, so often a larger team is needed (2+) A lot of set-up/tear-down time spent not actually doing any promo

How to table Set up a tabl e with pam phle ts, butt ons, peti tion and oth er pro mo sup plies in an area with high ped estri an traff ic Stan d near the tabl e and eng age thos e walk ing past in con vers atio n abo ut CIJI C TIPS: Have a pitchline (eg. “Have you heard of…?” or “Would you like to sign a petition against…?”) Talk with (friendly) energy and enthusiasm Talk to everyone – never judge a book by its cover! Don’t get discouraged by rejection

Mobile Tabling tabling (engaging pedestrians with promo materials in hand), but without the table as a reference point Advantages Disadvantages No time for set-up or tear-down needed, can be done efficiently for any length of time Can be done anywhere - is mobile It’s a little creepier since you don’t have the table behind you to lend you credibility Lack of table means lack of promo supplies -- you only have whatever you can carry

Petitioning A variant of (mobile) tabling that uses the petition as a way to initiate the conversation Generally, we try to always have a copy of the petition with use when (mobile) tabling AdvantagesDisadvantages We get signatures, as well as more contacts (emails ) Having to sign your name can scare people off...

Post-It Notes writing a sentence on a ton of post-it notes and sticking them everywhere Advantages Disadvantages Unique -- gets people where they don’t expect it, and thus helps to make CIJIC stand out Easy - can be done while you’re walking Fun! Really needs to be used in conjunction with other promo methods. Not effective by itself.

Ice Cream Talks Walking down hallway or sidewalk talking very loudly (for the purpose of being overhead) about an upcoming CIJIC event Effectively a short skit you put on while walking Advantages Disadvantages Unexpected -- people remember it Useful as a last-minute promotional technique right before an event Can get a lot of people aware about a specific event Skit must be under 10 seconds long, after which time people can no longer hear you Only good for conveying small bits of info (e.g. FREE FOOD IN THE AGORA )
