Warm-up Sept 9, 2013 What is a cell? What is an organelle? What is the function of the Cell Membrane? What is the function of the Cytoplasm? What is the function of the Nucleus? What is the function of the Nuclear Membrane? What is the function of the Nucleolus? What is the function of Chromatin?

Exit Questions Sept. 10, 2013 1. What is the function of a ribosome? 2. What is the function of a mitochondrion? 3. What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum? 4. What is the function of the golgi bodies? 5. What is the function of cytoskeleton? 6. What is the function of lysosome? 7. What is the function of a centriole? 8. What is the function of a vacuole?

Cell Is the basic unit of all living things

Organelles Structures that carry out different jobs within the cell.

Cell membrane The cell is surrounded by a membrane Allows certain molecules to pass in and out of the cell

Cytoplasm The clear, jelly-like material between the cell membrane and the nucleus The organelles float around in it Made mostly of water

Nucleus Structure that contains the cells DNA The control center of the cell

Nuclear membrane Dotted with thousands of pores, Materials move into and out of the nucleus through the pores.

Nucleolus Synthesis Ribosomes

Chromatin Consists of DNA bound to protein Contain genetic information

Mitochondrion The energy for the cell is produced in the mitochondria ATP is made here (ATP is the form of energy used by the cell)

Ribosomes Produce the cell’s proteins (Protein factories)

Endoplasmic Reticulum Rough ER- contains ribosomes along its surface, transport proteins WITHIN the cell Smooth ER- lacks ribosomes, transport lipids WITHIN the cell

Golgi Bodies/Apparatus proteins and lipids are collected, wrapped in a membrane, and released OUT of the cell.

Vacuole Organelle used to store materials in the cell Store excess materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates

Cytoskeleton/Microtubules A network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape Also used in movement

Lysosomes Sacs that contain strong digestive enzymes used for breaking down large molecules into smaller ones Used for digesting unwanted materials; riding the cell of waste

Centrioles Only found in animal cells Aid in cell reproduction
