Building with wood Vision “Wood and wood products to become one of the leading materials in construction and interior solutions in terms of value by 2010” Mission „The industry takes the lead to promote wood as a sustainable building material by establishing a new European framework for the use of wood for mass market development and for high standard engineered and architectural solutions.“ Objectives “Double the market share of wood and wood products in terms of value in construction in Europe by 2010 ” Building With Wood (BWW)

Building with wood New framework developed under leadership of industry Making wood a leading material Improve knowledge base and competence Create a strong desire for building with wood Building with wood: Core Strategies

Building with wood Forestry Primary Wood Industry Sawn timber; Panel products; Plywood Glulam, KVH Components Solutions roofs, walls, ceilings CONSTRUCTION M A R K E T Forestry Sector Sawmilling; Woodworking Industries Carpenters; Timber Engineering Companies Sector Structure Value Chain

Building with wood Basic Needs of the Construction Market Construction market is technically driven  safety and reliability of the material  raw material  products  competitiveness  competitors: concrete, bricks and steel  slim, understandable, userfriendly technical framework  Standards and Codes (e.g.: Eurocodes)  supporting tools (EDV)  Competence (Training and Education)  Architects, designers and Engineers  Engineering companies, builders  Information  Lobbying, PR and Marketing

Building with wood Building with wood Orientation of the process Building with wood  focuses on the legal and technical framework for timber construction in Europe (standards and Eurocodes), corresponding R&D topics (e.g.: material law), and in the next step training and education  acts under the perception that wood has to become a safe and reliable material  works towards a user friendly framework, state of the art standards and codes and of course the necessary supporting tools  understands itself as a complementary process to the various marketing and advertising initiatives, already carried out successfully throughout Europe

Building with wood Why do we need a material law A material model characterises the mechanical behaviour of wood and wood products under short-term and long-term loading and quantifies the influence of various technological parameters, such as density, moisture content, temperature, … Project: Validated Material Law Example

Building with wood Modelling expense increases with complexity of the material behaviour … steel: isotropic, homogeneous concrete: transverse isotropic, heterogeneous microstructure, different strength in tension / compression wood: anisotropic, inhomogeneous (growth irregularities), different strength in tension / compression and direction, large variation between individual issues Expense and complexity of modelling Project: Validated Material Law

Building with wood steelconcretewood Why do we need a material law  ~ durability  ~ thermal degradation (fire load)  ~ creep deformations  fatigue behaviour  elastoplastic behaviour  impact of environmental conditions ~ different types / species Generally applicable and physically sound material law for consideration of … Project: Validated Material Law

Building with wood Timber in construction is expanding more and more into new fields of application Competing materials (steel, concrete) are challenging wood as a construction material in the fields of reliability and safety Arising questions from the market have to be answered and requirements have to be met Technical braintrust and European cooperation in the essential strategic issues are of utmost importance The value chain has to work together on a national as well as on the European level Only a close and coordinated cooperation and participation can guarantee a success of the Roadmap processes Building with wood
