Socratic Seminar 5: Ch. 24-31

Let’s get critical: Some critics argue the flaw with TKAM lies in the “idealized portrayal of the black characters” (namely, Cal and Tom). Do you agree or disagree that these characters are more idealized and less realistic? How does the portrayal of these characters negatively or positively affect the impact of the text? What flaws do you find with TKAM?

Why was Miss Gates hatred for Hitler so ironic? What does this show about human nature?

How do the viewpoint and narration change throughout the novel? Are these changes realistic….why or why not?

How is this story, as Harper Lee claims, a “love story”?

How did this book impact you? Or less dramatically, what did you learn while reading this?

If absent: write a paragraph on each of the questions with two quotations as evidence for the makeup grade.
