2 Aims To know specific facts about the London 2012 Olympics Objectives To outline the history of Olympic games Recognise one famous symbol of the Olympics State when and where the Olympics will be taking place List two Welsh Olympians State the three equestrian events that will be happening at London 2012 Identify at least six Team GB Olympians and what sport they will be competing within.

3 Heritage of the Olympics The last time it was in London was? – 1908 – Originally awarded to Rome but the eruption on Mount Vesuvius in 1906 meant that it couldn’t take part – Great Britain topped the medals table followed by the USA The Olympics were held in London again in 1948 Straight after World War II – Again, last minute! – USA topped the medals table followed by Sweden then France

4 What is the symbol of the Olympics? What does it represent? Represents the five continents of the world involved in the Olympics. All have an equal opportunity (white paper)

11 Tom James Event - Rowing BEIJING gold medallist Tom James is aiming to follow in the footsteps of rowing legends Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent by defending his Olympic title at London. James returned from China as one of three Welsh sports stars to achieve golden glory, alongside cyclists Nicole Cooke and Geraint Thomas, following Britain’s triumph in the coxless fours. The 27-year-old from Wrexham is in line to be part of the London 2012 quartet who will be racing for an unprecedented fourth successive Olympic gold in what has become the blue riband event of British rowing.
