UNIT 7: POWER AND ENERGY Renewable and Nonrenewable Energy

UNIT 7 VOCABULARY 1. Biomass: the total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume 2. Consumption: the using up of a resource 3. Energy: the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity

UNIT 7 VOCABULARY 4. Fuel Cell: a device that converts chemical energy from a fuel into electricity 5. Geothermal: of, relating to, or produced by the internal heat of the earth 6. Nuclear: of or relating to the nucleus of an atom

UNIT 7 VOCABULARY 7. Pollution: the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects 8. Power: the ability to do something or act in a particular way, esp. as a faculty or quality 9. Solar: of, relating to, or determined by the sun

#10 Sources of Energy **Recreate the Chart** Renewable Energy 1. Solar Energy 2. Tidal Energy 3. Biomass Energy 4. Geothermal Energy 5. Wind Energy 6. Hydropower Nonrenewable Energy 1.Fossil Fuels 2.Nuclear (when creating energy)

**Write the descriptions and draw an example of each type of energy ** #11 Solar Energy energy we get from the sun In one hour, more sunlight falls on the earth than what is used by the entire population in one year.

#12 Geothermal energy the process of utilizing the Earth’s own natural heat in order to create electricity

#13 Wind Energy the wind spins the blades, which turn a shaft connected to a generator that produces electricity

#14 Hydropower power that is derived from the force or energy of moving water

#15 Nuclear Energy the use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and do useful work (not explode!)

#16 Biomass biological material from living, or recently living organisms

#17 Fossil fuel (Non Renewable) contain high percentages of carbon, include coal, petroleum, and natural gas Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form, and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being made.
