10 Materials Smart board YouTube video Authentic pictures Handouts( Words and phrases) Fresh vegetables, oil, salt, and eggs. Cooking ware.

11 Pre-requisite Skill Doing research about how to cook Menemen. Ingredients 8 tbsp olive oil 2 long green peppers halved, seeded, and finely chopped 2 large succulent tomatoes peeled and finely diced 4 large eggs lightly whisked pinch salt Directions Warm up the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the chopped green peppers and cook on the medium heat until the peppers start softening, yet do not pick up any brown color (about 3 min). Stir in the diced tomatoes (make sure you find the most succulent tomatoes the season allows) and simmer for about 5-7 min, or until most of the moisture evaporates. Eventually fold in the lightly whisked eggs. If you like menemen on the runnier side, just stir the eggs 2-3 times and remove the pan from the heat. Otherwise, continue cooking for about 1-2 minutes, gently stirring. You don’t want to overcook your Menemen until it’s dry and crumbling: be proud to serve the still rather runny and utterly delicious Turkish scrambled eggs with plenty of white bread.

12 Grouping Strategy Small Group (2-3 students per group) Will tell others the steps of menemen in Turkish (HLL). Large Group (4-6 students per group) Will each do chopping, cutting etc..

Without looking, students touch, shake, smell and feel the contents of the bag, and try to guess what the contents of the bag are. Those who guess correctly are given a prize (since summer camp students don’t receive a grade at the end of the program). Differentiation: Heritage students can lead the game, giving the commands to other students such as shake it, smell it, etc. Heritage students can tell how often their families cook Menemen, and who likes it the most in their families.

26 EXIT CARD Students draw a picture or write any vocabulary that they enjoyed learning. Teacher gives them a sticker to encourage them.
