4 Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919) AKA: Teddy American author, naturalist, explorer, historian, and politician 1901: became President after McKinley was assassinated Known for his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his “cowboy" persona and robust masculinity Foreign Policy: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” o Equivalent to Bismarck’s Realpolitik o Defines U.S. imperialism

6 Puerto Rico Acquired after war with Spain Initially supposed to become independent. 1917: US Congress grants P.R. the right to elect all of their legislators Becomes US territory and its people American Citizens 1952: citizens voted to reject both statehood and total independence  chose commonwealth status, many moved to U.S.

9 The Panama Canal Colombian legislature refused to ratify a treaty in 1903 which would give US rights in the country U.S. marines helped Panamanian revolutionaries declare independence from Colombia Panama independent, President Roosevelt recognizes it as new country, signed a treaty granting US rights to a “canal zone” U.S. took over the project in 1904  officially opened on August 15, 1914.  huge triumph of engineering by Col. George Goethals Reduced the amount of time taken for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Canal was taken over by Panamanian government in 1999 Marks the end of American expansionism … temporarily

Why does America have to intervene? (What are his justifications?) What is America's purpose? What does Wilson say about the German people? Why does he talk about them to this extent?

13 Wilson’s “Fourteen Points” Declaration of war aims submitted to the Senate in Jan 1918 o End of secret treaties o Freedom of the seas o Mutual reductions in national armaments o Reduction of colonial empires o Most important: creation of a League of Nations to afford “mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike.”
