1 SuitSat2 Mechanical Safety Notes Purpose Temporarily capture safety suggestions for the mechanical team of SuitSat2. Contents 1.Solar Panel Covers 2.Control Box 3.Misc Details

2 Solar Panel Covers Each of 6 solar panels (17”x8.25”) will have a Cover (18”x9.25”) Covers will protect cells from moderate impact (planned AL thickness.062”) ¼” gap between Panel and Cover will not be “sealed” around the perimeter of Cover Planned 3 inhibits for Covers –Captured fasteners ● –Velcro patches ■ –Velcro straps ▐ The captured fasteners may be either –Screws (TBD capture mechanism) –Panel screws (catalog items: captured; slotted head and/or finger knurls) –Quick release pins (tethered) Covers will have two glove-friendly fabric loop handles (one each end) Covers will have additional velcro to allow stacking for storage after satellite release All 6 Covers will be tethered together or connected by fabric “hinges” KF4KSS Aug 12, 2009 Fabric straps Fabric handle Fabric handle Fabric handle Fabric handle Fabric handle Fabric handle

3 Control Box Control Box will be recessed but exposed. Top Plate is ¼” thick. Can Control Box be recessed this much or does it need to be closer to flush? I assume potential inhibits of switches is Lou’s responsibility. Obviously I mention it here because I’m afraid it will come back to me. –Lou’s concept was a wedge to prevent switches from “ON” position. –Other options may include Cover over entire Control Box KF4KSS Aug 12, 2009

4 Misc Details Glove-friendly Handles on four edges –Similar to design from SuitSat1 –Possibly longer so it’s easier to switch hands –Approximately 23” apart All corners rounded to R 1/16” Similar to SuitSat1, whip antennas will be layered inside Kapton tape and stowed I assume no prohibitions against socket head cap screws on structure exterior –Nuts and exposed threads will be interior –Would like to avoid countersunk screws everywhere KF4KSS July 31, 2009
