1 CHAPTER 2 FAMOUS FIRST WORDS VISUAL AIDS SPEECHS BULLER SPEECH I

2 Stage fright: the nervousness you feel when appearing as a speaker or performer before and audience. Purpose sentence: a single sentence stating the intent of your speech. Ex: The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about the proper care of a dog as a pet.

3 Audience Analysis: knowing the background, attitude, and interests of those who will be listening to you speak. Topical: referring to the subject, broken down into parts

4 Chronological: order develops in the same order that the events happen. Ex: History of women’s rights. Spatial: order uses space arrangements to tie the parts of a speech together. Ex: Telling someone about vacation

5 Problem-solution: presents a problem that exists and develops a solution to the problem. Introduction: should get the attention of the audience. Body: is the subject matter, your personal knowledge, plus any researched material you add to your speech.

6 Conclusion: a brief summary which brings the main points of the speech into final focus. No new material should be introduced in the conclusion because it will confuse the audience. “Wrapping things up”

7 Slogan: a clever word or phrase. Jingle: a catchy phrase or verse which is sung or put to music.

9 ACTIVITY 1 – OBJECT SPEECH Objective: To promote self-confidence in speech making by using an object as a visual aid. 1.Bring an object to class. 2.The object will need to be a practical object. 3.Show the object and completely describe it. 4.Tell the uses of the object. These may be practical or humorous or both. 5.Tell anything else that pertains to the object that may be of interest to the audience. 6.The speech may be either informative or entertaining. 7.Time limit for the speech is one to two minutes.

11 ACTIVITY 2 – CHALK TALK Objective: To promote self-confidence in speech making by using the board as a helpful visual aid. 1.Choose a subject which will lend itself to illustration. 2.Prepare a speech outline and drawings to accompany the speech. 3.The drawings should help the audience understand the speech subject more clearly. 4.Talk about a particular subject while using the chalkboard. Talk and draw, draw and talk. 5.This speech is not a test of artistic ability. Simple drawings are best for this assignment. 6.The speech may be either entertaining or informative. 7.Time limit for the speech is one to two minutes. 8.The board work may be words, drawings, diagrams, symbols, or anything that enhances the topic. 9.Use as much of the board as possible, working from left to right. 10.Be aware of the audience, and be sure not to block the board.
