1 WELCOME TO CURRICULUM NIGHT! MR. HALEY Essential Questions Course Description Regents Examination & Global I Final Grading Policy Homework 9/11/13

2 Essential Questions By the end of curriculum night, you the parent/guardian should be able to answer the following questions :  What is the course grading policy?  What is the Regents Exam based on?  What are the typical homework assignments and how often are these assignments given?

3 Course Description  Global History & Geography is a two year course on the study of World History  Global I – 1 st Year: Deals with different regions of the world. (Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, etc.)  Global II – 2 nd Year: Deals with European History. (Starts with Ancient Greeks, finishes with Cold War)  These courses deal with a variety of topics but focus on the political, economic, and social developments in history.

4 NYS Global History & Geography Regents Examination  Cumulative Exam from both the Global I & II Curriculums – Consists of 3 Parts  50 Multiple Choice Questions  2 Essays:  Document Based Question Essay 8-12 Documents to analyze with scaffolding questions. Write an essay using documents and outside information.  Thematic Essay General theme essay. Ex: Impact of Geography or Individuals and their impact on their societies.  GLOBAL I STUDENTS HAVE A FINAL EXAM THAT IS SET UP LIKE A REGENTS EXAM

5 Grading Policy  Unit Test Average (40%)  Given at the completion of a unit of study.  Example: 1 Africa Unit Test  Quiz Average (40%)  Homework Average (20%)

6 Quizzes (40%)  Any quiz which is unannounced will be an open notebook quiz  Quizzes are usually given weekly to summarize student learning.  Students may retake quizzes if they choose to for a higher grade!

7 Homework (20%)  Homework will be done on 5 X 8 Note Cards. Students will be given a homework topic(s). 1. On the Note Card they write that topic assigned. 2. They will perform the 5W’s: Answering the questions Who, What, Where, When, and Why in complete sentences.  The following day (the day the homework is due) we will go over the topic(s) as a class. The students will write the summary (on the back of the Note Card) that we come up with as a group in class.

8 HOMEWORK Note Card EXAMPLE (Front) Mr. Haley Who:Mr. Haley is a teacher and coach who received his degrees from St. Lawrence University. What:Mr. Haley teaches Global History & Geography I. He also coaches Varsity Football and Modified Baseball. Where:Mr. Haley lives in the Massena area and teaches at Massena High School. When:He started teaching in 2006 and continues to do so today. Why:Mr. Haley loves history and enjoys working with young people.

9 SUMMARY Mr. Haley’s classroom is 409. He is an eighth year teacher at MCHS. He is part of the Freshman Academy and is teaching only Global I this year. Mr. Haley has traveled to both Jamaica and Spain. HOMEWORK Note Card EXAMPLE (Back)

10 Homework Note Card Grading  Any assignment which is incorrect but complete, may be redone for a 100 within 3 days.  Holistic GRADING:

11 Other Assignments  Guided Note Packet Assignments: Occasionally I will assign a page or two from the students’ guided notes or from another source to be completed as a homework assignment. This assignment will be graded as homework.  DBQ/Thematic Essays: Usually at least once a term a student can expect to receive an essay.  Sometimes theses will be done in class.  Other times students will have some time in class and an extended period of 3 – 7 days to complete an essay as a homework assignment.  This assignment will be graded as a test.  Projects: Students will receive projects at the teachers discretion as homework with additional in class time to complete the project. Projects will be graded as a test.

13 NYS Learning Standard 2: World History  Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives.

14 NYS Learning 3: Geography  Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we live— local, national, and global—including the distribution of people, places, and environments over the Earth’s surface.
