2. Welcome The mission of the Oregon Battle of the Books is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, to promote academic excellence and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

3. Questions SET A OBOB Level 6-9 Regional Competition Question: In which book are characters frightened by gunfire that turns out to be a friendly salute? Answer: $14.00 Author: Gretchen Olson p. 42 16 questions in pool play battles  Some titles may have more than one question  Some titles may not have any questions 8 In Which Book (IWB) questions 8 Content questions Final rounds – 32 questions Score Team 1 ___ Team 2 ___

4. Teams Teams – Up to 4 members One optional alternate Alternate can be exchanged in between battles One spokesperson Two teams compete during each Battle May not use any notes or lists Electronic devices, including cell phones, prohibited during Battles All teams competing must be present

5. Teams Team to moderator’s left  Odd questions Team to moderator’s right  Even questions Time begins after the question is read once  15 seconds to collaborate  Question may be repeated at spokesperson’s request  Repeats must take place within the 15 seconds  Answer must be given immediately upon time being called

6. Questions Only the spokesperson’s answer will be accepted  Answer is correct even if mispronounced  Answer must be given immediately if spokesperson interrupts moderator Answer will be disqualified if  Other team members talk while spokesperson is answering  Anyone prompts the spokesperson while answering Questions answered incorrectly or with partial scores are repeated to opposing team  15 seconds to collaborate  Play does not pass back to original team  If neither team gets the correct answer reveal it before moving on

7. Questions IWB questions will be read first  Answer will be the title and author and must match what is written on the card  Answer with/without a, an, the accepted as correct  Worth 5 points  3 points for first correct portion  2 points for second correct portion Content questions will be read second  Worth 5 points  With two-part questions  3 points for first correct answer  2 points for second correct answer

8. Question Errors If the Moderator makes a mistake with a question Examples: o Moderator forgets to offer the question to the other team if not all points were awarded to the first team it was given to o Moderator accidently gives the answer away The question is removed from the battle and an extra question is put in it’s place. It is numbered to take the place of the botched question and it’s a complete do over starting with the team that number was first offered to.

9. “Who” questions A “who” question doesn’t require a person’s name and all possible and acceptable answers are listed with OR between them. Example: Who Takes Maggie to the library to get information about the Korean War? Answer: her mom OR Mrs. Fortini

10. “OR” questions OR indicates either answer is acceptable Example: What does Rapunzel’s father sneak from Gothel’s garden? Answer: Rapunzel leaf OR lettuce (Note: Just “leaf” would not be an acceptable answer)

11. “Two part” questions 5 points for both parts correct, 3 for only one correct, 0 for neither If only one part is correct reveal which part is right before turning the question over to the other team to try for the other 2 points  The second team may only give one answer  If two answers are given the Moderator will only consider the first answer said by the spokesperson

12. “What is the name” questions Requires a name for the answer If asked for first and last name both names must be correct to receive 5 points No partial points are given for half a correct answer unless specified as a 2 part question If asked for a complete name it may include a title (ex. Captain) or the middle name to be included

13. “Quotations” in answers Quotations mean the wording has to be exact (ex. a slogan, motto, name of place or thing) Example: What is the name of the place where Ivan lives before being transferred to Zoo Atlanta? Answer: “Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade”

14. (Parentheses) in answers Parentheses indicates acceptable but not required part of the answer Example: What is the name of the hair salon where Joey’s mother works? Answer: Beauty and the Beast (Hair Salon)

15. Challenges Challenges will be offered but not encouraged at the end of each Battle by the moderator 15 seconds for teams to decide Each team may challenge only one question if they were not credited for a correct answer Teams may only challenge a question they provided an answer for Spokesperson must be able to reference their original response In the event that both teams want to challenge the same question the team who was asked the question first will be given the first opportunity to prove their challenge. If that answer is accepted the other team may not challenge that question but may challenge a different question.

16. Challenge Protocol o 15 seconds for both teams to simultaneously decide if they want to challenge a question (ask which question they want to challenge in case both teams want to pursue the same one)  2 minutes to find and mark passage with sticky note provided  Timing begins once the team has two copies of the book  At the end of 2 minutes, spokesperson must show exact wording  Judges/Moderator will determine success of challenge  Successful challenge may result in points being amended  Only one team may earn points from any given question  The decision of the Battle Officials is ALWAYS final Battle is complete when  Challenge is resolved  Opportunity for spokesperson to initial score sheet has been given

17. Battle Rules & Procedures Each team battles twice in the preliminary rounds First round bracket seeding is based on total points of the two battles Wins in preliminary rounds do not determine who moves on to elimination rounds Tie breaker questions will be used after the preliminary rounds only if a tie exists between the last place qualifying teams and will be handled by the Tournament Officials.

18. Tie Breakers Tiebreaker questions will be used, if necessary, only during single elimination tournament, NOT in preliminary (pool play) rounds  An equal number of questions will be read to each team  Two IWB questions will be read, one to each team, and then two Content questions  Acquiring points from the other team if they miss an answer is NOT allowed.  The team with more points after at least one set of four questions has been read, will be declared the winner  Challenges ARE allowed after each tiebreaker round with the usual challenge time in effect.

19. Tie Breaker Scoring Tie breaker scoring on back of scoresheets for single elimination rounds ROUND ONE Once a challenge has been offered on a set of questions, those questions are no longer accessible whether they are from the main battle or a round of four. 3 points2 points Total3 points2 pointsTotal IWB CONTENT

20. Supplies In each room there will be:  OBOB questions  Two OBOB book sets provided by the teams battling  Official book list  Official Rules and Procedures  Coin  Score sheets  Stopwatch  Sticky notes  Pencils

21. Battle Officials Moderator Scorekeeper Timekeeper Room Director Two coach/judges  One coach from each team will serve as an impartial judge at each Battle  They will sit by the moderator on the opposite side of their team  One coach/judge will be the timekeeper

22. Moderator’s Role In preliminary round – conduct three Battles Collect set of books from each team Review Basic Rules and make introductions Ask that cell phones/electronic devices be turned off Photos/videos taken only before or after Battle Manage audience behavior Conduct coin toss Consult with judges during battles Write scores and incorrect answers on the question cards indicating which team gave that particular answer Offer Challenges at the end of the battle Have spokespersons initial official score sheet

23. Coach/Judge’s Role Serve as co-judge for each Battle in which team participates Sit next to the moderator on the opposite side of where your team is seated for the battle Exemplify honesty, integrity, fair play, and good sportsmanship May NOT communicate with team or take notes during battle Ensure that team is polite Do not allow team or supporters to argue with officials Remember that all OBOB Officials are volunteers

24. Coach-Judge’s Role (cont.) One coach/judge will be the paper scorekeeper The other coach/judge may be the timekeeper Moderator will show cards to judges and confer with judges when team answer is not exactly what is on the card Moderator will make final decision, if necessary Decisions by moderator/judges are final  No further discussion may be entertained during the battles  Teams will have an opportunity to challenge a decision at the end of the battle

25. Scorekeeper’s Role The white board scorekeeper will keep score so that it’s visible to all One coach/judge will keep official paper score sheet Both score keepers will write school names in correct location after coin toss Award points correctly Add up points at the end of the Battle Compare white board scores with official score sheet Ask to pause Battle should a scoring conflict arise

26. Timekeeper’s Role Start stopwatch as soon as moderator finishes reading the question Call time after 15 seconds Follow challenge protocol  Call time at end of each time period  15 seconds to determine challenge  2 minutes to complete challenge

27. Everyone’s Role Keep mission statement in mind at all times Ultimate goal: promote reading and have fun! Good sportsmanship is a must Keep in mind that OBOB is operated by volunteers
