Borrow a Bike scheme Claire Fleming Swindon Borough Council swindontravelchoices@swindon.gov.uk

Borrow a Bike scheme Funded through LSTF 2015-16 Targetted scheme for residents in priority areas and students aged 16-19 Borrow a bike for free for 6 weeks or one term Dedicated officer to engage with participants

How it worked Promoted through various channels All participants directed to Becky Meeting Monitoring After 6 weeks…

Who took part 148 people (target was 100) Participants had low levels of cycle use prior to borrowing bike. Participants made short journeys in their everyday life Three quarters needed to borrow the bike to commute Gender split – 53% male / 47% female

Vital access to work & school “My daughter was not interested in cycling before I got a bike. Now she is cycling mad and we regularly go on rides together, she cycles to school and has much more independence. It's given me the chance to try cycling to work without having to buy a bike. I've found that cycling to work is often quicker than driving. I've also got my fitness back after having to give up running. I can now get to school on time after work to collect my daughter, whereas before she was waiting for me.”

Vital transport for shiftworkers Anthony jumped at the chance of using a bike to help him access his work at Greenbridge. He works shifts and really struggled because of irregular buses and the 2.5 mile walk at night. Cycling enabled him to get to work safely and on time.

Other benefits Improved health Saving money Accessing training Encouraging other family members to cycle Reliability of getting to work on time Creating converts to cycling

Where are we now? Funding expired March 2016 Bid to Transition Fund SBC have kept small pool for 6 week loans to staff… inc electric bike, girly bikes and commuter bikes. Could it be something your organisation could offer to staff?

What can we learn? Allowing staff to try a bike can help them to realise benefits for themselves Encouraging more staff to cycle will reduce car parking pressure, increase health and wellbeing and make journey times more reliable Borrowing a bike was particularly useful for short term staff, and shift workers. Many workers went on to purchase a bike through employer’s cycle to work scheme.
