2 About Healthway Established under the Tobacco Control Act 1990 Funds activities that promote health, particularly that of young people and disadvantaged groups Provides grants to organisations engaged in health promotion programs and research Sponsors sports, arts and racing activities which encourage healthier lifestyles and provide an opportunity to promote health messages

7 Types of Research Grants Research Starter Grants Research Project Grants

8 Starter Grants Either new researchers or new research ideas New researchers are encouraged to link with experienced researchers who may be listed as AI’s on the application Applications are encouraged to address Healthway’s high priority areas

9 Up to $30,000 for 18 months Applicants must demonstrate that the starter grant research is achievable and realistic within the timeframe and budget Notification in June 2013 Starter Grants

10 Research Project Grants Up to $120,000 per year for 1- 3 years Intervention research up to $150,000 per year for up to 3 years Additional funding only available in year(s) of intervention development Loadings applied for physical activity promotion, good nutrition promotion, mental health promotion, tobacco smoking control, reducing harm from alcohol and Indigenous health

11 Research Project Grants Clear contribution to improving knowledge or best practice in health promotion Include health promotion practitioners on research team CI’s may not have their name on more than four project grant applications including current and new grants Applications in similar areas may not be funded Applications should clearly identify which of the project objectives can be achieved if funding from other partners is unsuccessful

12 Some Do’s and Don’t’s! DO provide a title and description of your project that is understandable to the lay community DO provide a clear justification for the health promotion benefits of your project DON’T assume knowledge of the reader DO develop your proposal in collaboration with other CIs

13 Applications due 28 February 2013 Applications within guidelines go to external assessors Applications then go to Healthway spokesperson for additional comment Applicants will receive all reviews from Healthway by 24 May 2013 Applicants responses due at Healthway by 5pm 7 June 2013 Assessment of Research Project Grants

14 Submitting Electronic Applications A PDF copy of Starter Grant and Research Project Grant applications should also be sent to: research@healthway.wa.gov.au It is still necessary to submit the required number of hardcopy applications for these grants by the due date and time.
