In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, a naïve girl, Connie, meets a deceptive, older man, Arnold Friend. Connie is persuaded by Arnold Friend’s charm and good looks, which causes her to be deceived and fall into his trap. Connie pretends to be a more sophisticated and mature teenager by socializing with older teens and acting more provocative than she truly is. However, in reality Connie is naïve and gullible. Connie’s actions attract the wrong kind of attention, and she realizes that not everyone is who they appear to be.
