5 Trainees Research Fellowship Scheme Since 1993 we have awarded 700+ Research Fellowships Currently costing average £58,000 Comprising of full salary costs Consumables grant Travel expenses to scientific meetings Spent over £35 million

6 Funding Initially from our own endowments (interest rates are poor) Increasingly gain support from external donors either corporate, individuals or other charities Numerous joint research fellowships with Specialist Association e.g. currently: BAPRAS, Circulation Foundation Major Funders: CRUK, MRC, Wellcome, Arthritis UK

7 The selection process for Research Fellowships Autumn advertise widely throughout the UK Closing date: February Received 116 applications from our Members in 2015 Mark/assign 4 external Assessors to mark each application Criteria – Scores Shortlisted 48 in early July for 20 Research Fellowships

8 Research Viva Shortlisted applicants attend the Viva in July and are assessed by around 8 Professors

9 Outcome of the Scheme AUDIT Impact factor of publications Academics Higher degrees – 99% (60% PhDs) Translational – patient benefits RESEARCH Tip to toe Laboratory based Educational Audit - epidemiological

15 CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS UNIT Established 1998 as an academic collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Largely self-funded by external project grants Purpose is to conduct national clinical audits Staff of 18 – academics and clinicians

16 Current projects include: Funded by HQIP, on behalf of NHS England –National Oesophago–Gastric Cancer Audit –National Bowel Cancer Audit –National Prostate Cancer Audit –National Vascular Registry –Falls and Fragility Fractures Programme (with RCP) –National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (with RCoA) Other projects –Cleft lip and Palette (CRANE) Database (since 2005) Projects undertaken jointly with Specialist Associations. 6 trainee surgeons and 1 physician

17 SURGICAL TRIALS INITIATIVE Led by Professor Dion Morton Established in 2012 - 5 Surgical Trials Units in the UK, soon to be 6 -14 Surgical Specialty Leads with Specialist Associations, soon to be 16 Overseen by CRISC (Clinical Research Initiative Steering Committee) NCT’s - £26m 2014/2015 Trainee Collaboratives and StarSurge
