5 Erie Canal System The Erie Canal connected New York City to the mid-west 1.Increased development of NY 2.Increased economic importance of NYC 3.Connection between east and west

6 The National Road The National Road connected Americans to the west 1.Connection between east and west 2.More people move west (manifest destiny)

7 Cotton becomes KING  More cotton being grown (large scale farming)  More farming means more slaves!!!

8 The Missouri Compromise 1821  Missouri territory applies to become part of the United States  Would be a free or slave state?  Compromise – Missouri would be admitted as a slave state with Maine being admitted as a free state No more slavery north of the 36’30’’N LINE

9 New England Manufacturing Centers:1830s New England develops into a center for Manufacturing 1.Water Powered Mills 2.Women flock to work in first factories 3.America no long dependent on Great Britain
