Computer Center of Peking University CARSI Today and the Near Future Prof. Ping CHEN Peking University, Beijing, China June 4 th, 2013

Computer Center of Peking University What is CARSI? C ERNET A uthentication and R esource S haring I nfrastructure Goals: –To integrate university IDMs (ID Managements) to a CERNET (China Education and Research NETwork) ID federation –To share university authentic user info resources over CERNET and for commercial applications –To share existing protected web applications to more users –To provide a fundamental AAI (Authentication & Authorization Infrastructure) middleware for CERNET applications –To push new applications (e.g. …) among universities 2

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI’s short history Initiated in 2005, being one part of a network security project Extended to 4 universities in 2008 Extended to 30 universities in 2010 3

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI Deployment (Aug. 2012) 31 univs., 5 partners, 0.7 million users Universities: 1.Beihang University 2.Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications 3.Central South University 4.Chongqing University 5.Dalian University of Technology 6.Fudan University 7.Harbin Institute of Technology 8.Hebei Normal University 9.Huazhong University of Science and Technology 10.Jilin University 11.Lanzhou University 12.Liaoning University 13.Northeastern University 14.Ocean University of China 15.Peking University 16.Pingdingshan University 17.Shandong University 18.Shanghai Jiaotong University 19.Shenzhen University 20.South China University of Technology 21.Tianjin University 22.Tongji University 4

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI Deployment (Aug. 2012) (cont.) 31 univs., 5 partners, 0.7 million users Universities: 23.Tsinghua University 24.University of Electronic Science and Technology of China 25.University of International Business and Economics 26.University of Beijing Science and Technology 27.University of Science and Technology of China 28.Xiamen University 29.Xi'an Jiaotong University 30.Zhejiang University 31.Zhengzhou University Partners: 1.CERNET New Concept Corp. 2.Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (IEEE Xplore Digital Library) 3.International Network for a Digital Cultural Heritage e-Infrastructure (INDICATE) 4.Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC Publishing) 5.Thomson Reuters (ISI Web of Knowledge) 5

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI Applications Applications (34): 16 Univ. Bulletin Board Systems, PT Forum 2 Univ. Blog Systems 8 VoD (Voice on Demand) Systems 3 Univ. SNS (Social Network System) 3 library resources 1 research cooperation 1 commercial website Categories (6): Federation Applications Library Resources Courses Online Studying Resources (e.g. learning notes, etc.) Classical Lectures (e.g. Nobel lectures, etc.) Jobs & New Business 6 Have used the Identity Federation

Computer Center of Peking University Deployment Experiences (1) Till now, sponsored primarily by national research projects –CNGI (China Next Generation Infrastructure) project: 2006, 2008 –National Science and Technology Project: 2006, 2009 –The previous project finished in Aug. 2012 > 30 universities are connected in this project –A new project is going on, i.e. the library one So, instead of a production environment, CARSI is still in the pilot stage 7

Computer Center of Peking University Deployment Experiences (2) Pros-1:To assemble collaboration by common interests to maintain CARSI’s sustainable operation and development –In 2008 project, the theme was the Studying and Living Information Exchange among universities. > 30 universities joined in and contributed their resources concerning with campus activities. CARSI organized some related applications. –In the ongoing project, the theme is the library digital resources. CALIS (C hina A cademic L ibrary & I nformation S ystem) already has ~1800 member libraries. 8

Computer Center of Peking University Deployment Experiences (3) Pros-2: To disseminate in CERNET and via other channels –Some universities come to join spontaneously. –If the universities heard about it before, it’s easier to talk with them. –Some librarians have interests, they are willing to make it into practice, thus pushing a lot. 9

Computer Center of Peking University Deployment Experiences (4) Cons: –No specific company or organization or staff to be responsible for the operating. –No stable funds to extend CARSI and to maintain the operation of the established IdPs (Identity Providers) and SPs (Service Providers). –Still a lot of people know nothing about it yet. 10

Computer Center of Peking University The Near Future CARSI + CALIS (see next slides) CARSI + Scientific Computation 11

Computer Center of Peking University What is CALIS? China Academic Library & Information System http://www.calis.edu.cn Based on university libraries, more than 500 members in China Built from 1998 1/3 Higher Education Basic Public Services The introduction of a series of domestic and foreign literature databases The development of the online cooperative cataloging system, document delivery and interlibrary loan system over member libraries The formation of a more complete CALIS literature information service network 12

Computer Center of Peking University More about CALIS (1) 1 National Administrative Center: Library of Peking University 4 National Information Service Centers: –Arts & Sciences: Peking Univ. –Engineering: Tsinghua Univ –Agriculture: China Agriculture Univ –Medicine: Peking Univ. 7 Regional Information Service Centers: –Northeast China: Nanjing Univ. –Southeast China: Shanghai Jiaotong Univ. –Central China: Wuhan Univ. –South China: SUN YAT-SEN Univ. –Northwest China: Xi’an Jiaotong Univ. –Southwest: Sichuan Univ. –Northeast: Jilin Univ. 13

Computer Center of Peking University More about CALIS (2) CALIS Phase III, finished in July 2012 “National Center – Regional/Provincial Center – library” 3-layer architecture 32 Provincial Center to supply SaaS (System as a Service) to ~1800 middle or small size libraries 7 basic SaaS services: –Cooperative Cataloging and bibliographic distribution –Coordination of procurement and resource building –Public Access and Resource navigation –Citation Query and Theme Advisory –Document Delivery and the original acquisition –Software Sharing and technical support –Training and Qualification 14

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI + CALIS Past In the past, a part of CNGI (China Next Generation Infrastructure) project (2008.12-2010.12) To implement the inter-visiting –CARSI users can visit CALIS applications –CALIS users can visit CARSI applications 15

Computer Center of Peking University CALIS Users visit CARSI 16

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI Users visit CALIS 17

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI + CALIS On-going In the on-going project (2012.1-2013.12) Based on CALIS SaaS deployment Identity Federation as a SaaS service CALIS member library can be a CARSI member by choosing this service CALIS library users can visit foreign databases over Shibboleth except by IP blocks 18

Computer Center of Peking University CARSI + Scientific Computation INDICATE: International Network for a Digital Cultural Heritage e-Infrastructure 19

Computer Center of Peking University Conclusion CARSI today –31 universities., 5 partners, 0.7million users, >30 applications CARSI in the near future –CARSI + CALIS –Identity Federation will be one of CALIS SaaS service –CARSI + Scientific Computation 20
