2 2 What is ENVIS?  Environmental Information System  Established in December, 1982  By the Government of India  Focal point: MoEF  Website : www.envis.nic.inwww.envis.nic.in  Focus  On providing environmental information to decision makers, policy planners, scientists and engineers, educators, research workers, and interested individuals etc. all over the country.

3 3 Network of Centres ENVIS is  Decentralised system  With a network of distributed subject oriented Centres (78) set up in different organisations/establishments in the country in selected areas of environment  Ensuring integration of national efforts in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned

4 4 ENVIS Objectives Long-term  to build up a repository and dissemination centre in Environmental Science and Engineering  to gear up the modern technologies of acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature  to support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology

5 5 ENVIS Objectives Short-term  to provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information  to build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities with the ultimate objectives of disseminating information speedily to the users  to promote, national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of environment related information  to promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilisation capabilities  to promote exchange of information amongst developing countries

6 6 CEE as an ENVIS Centre  Established 1992  To support the information needs in Environmental Education of the national and international community

7 7 Responsibilities (defined by the focal point)  Building up a good collection of books, reports and journals in the particular subject area of environment  Establishment of linkages with all information sources in the particular subject area of environment  Responding to user queries  Establishment of a data bank on some selected parameters relating to the subject area  Coordination with the Focal Point for supplying relevant, adequate and timely information to the users  Bringing out newsletters/publications in their subject area for wide dissemination.

8 8 Objectives of CEE-ENVIS  To select, collect, organize and disseminate authentic information on Environmental Education and awareness  To support Environmental Educators and Communicators to develop and deliver more effective, innovative, scientific and locale- specific EE programs  To promote information exchange among environmental educators  To build HR capacity for environmental information servicing
