2 Warriner’s p. 61, ex. 1 New Guinea rivers like the one shown are popular areas for rafting enthusiasts. As you can see, a series of nearly continuous rapids crisscrosses jungles of primeval beauty. The twenty-eight major rapids on the Tua River make it a course for rafters with experience and courage. Brilliantly colored butterflies brighten the river banks, and the metallic whine of cicadas almost completely covers the roar of the river. The banks are a chaos of tumbled boulders and uprooted trees.

3 Warriner’s p. 61, ex. 1 6. Beautiful tropical forests along the way blanket the mountains above the river. However, rafters don’t have much chance for sightseeing. They can’t pay much attention to anything except the swirling water around their rafts. Do you enjoy moments of high adventure? Wouldn’t you love a trip down this wild river in the South Pacific?

On the canal’s elaborate series of locks, which raise and lower the water levels, ships can travel from ocean to ocean. (all phrases modify “can travel”) Construction of the canal, an engineering marvel, began in 1904 and continued until (“Construction” is a noun in this sentence, thus “of the canal” is an adjective phrase) Naturally, the builders faced many obstacles during the canal’s construction. Mosquitoes posed a major health risk throughout the area and had to be eliminated.

5 Warriner’s p. 62, ex. 2 For the duration of the canal project, Dr. William C. Gorgas, an army surgeon, fought the mosquitoes. (“of the canal project” modifies “duration”, a noun, thus it is an adjective phrase) With great efficiency, he drained swamps, fumigated buildings, and installed a pure water supply. After the resignation of two chief engineers, President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 appointed Army Lieutenant Colonel George Goethals chief engineer. (“of two chief engineers” is an adjective phrase) Goethals, active in all phases of canal construction, quickly gained the respect of workers. This photograph shows some of the workers who dug through the mountains along the Istmus of Panama.
