1 International Welder - a success in Sweden
Lars Johansson, Swedish Welding Commission, Eurojoin 9, May 2015, Bergen, Norway

2 Welding in Sweden today
Mass-produced welded products are welded with robots… ...but a great amount of welding is still made manually

3 From manual to robotic welding
Example: BT Products AB, Mjölby, Leading manufacturer of Warehouse trucks Yesterday: MMA-welding Today: robotic welding

4 Smaller changes for welding in for example the process industry
Yesterday Today

5 Number of welders in Sweden
…plus – with welding as a part of their job Source: SCB (code self-employed people and companies with one employee)

6 Reduced Swedish participation in the production of large steel structures in Sweden
Sundsvall bridge Built 2109 metres (steel part 1420 metres) 11 bridge sections (box girders) tons steel Welded large copmponents from: Germany, (Poland) Welders from Bulgaria, Poland, and Portugal

7 Today welders are needed…
…in manufacturing of steel structures

8 Today welders are needed…
…in small work shops

9 Today welders are needed…
…in the process industry

10 Today welders are needed…
…in repair shops

11 IW – International Welder
IIW education, training and qualification system IWE – International Welding Engineer IWT – International Welding Technologist IWS – International Welding Specialist IWP – International Welding Practitioner IW – International Welder IWIP – International Welding Inspection Personnel IWSD – International Welded Structures Designer

12 The International Welder education consists of three levels
International Tube Welder International Plate Welder International Fillet Welder

13 International Welder, IW modules for practical training
MMA MAG TIG Gas E2 T3 Tube Welder Plate Fillet E3

14 International Welder, IW modules for theoretical education
MMA MAG TIG Gas Tube Welder Plate Fillet Modul C 7 h Modul B 18 h Modul A 20 h Modul PAL 8 h Modul PSS 8 h SA 5 h SM ST SG

15 International Welder, MAG process
ISO 9606 International Tube Welder MAG M6 50 h ISO 9606, only visual testing required M5 75 h ISO 9606 International Plate Welder MAG M4 75 h ISO 9606, only visual testing required M3 75 h International Fillet Welder MAG ISO 9606 M2 90 h ISO 9606, only visual testing required M1 90 h 455 h practical + 52 h theoretical + 23 h examination = totally 530 h (average student)

16 Practical training (Example, module E2)
Practical training Material group 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 11 (ISO/TR 15608) No. Process 111 Type of weld Recommended material thickness / diameter [mm] Welding position Sketch Remarks 1 Introduction Both rutile and basic electrodes shall be used in both single and multi run welding. 2 Fillet weld, T-joint t > 8 PD Welding around the corner 3 Fillet weld, tube to plate t > 3 D ≥ 40 PB 4 D > 150 PH* 5 40 ≤ D ≤ 80 6 *According to ISO 6947:2011 welding position PF for tubes has been changed to test position PH covering PE, PF and PA.

17 Practical examination (Example, module E2)
Qualification tests according to the appropriate part of ISO 9606 examined by an independent authorized examiner. No. Type of weld Recommended material thickness / diameter [mm] Welding position Sketch Remarks 1 Fillet weld, tube to plate t > 3 D ≥ 40 PD 2 PH* For test object examination use the test object for fillet weld and test No 1. For test objects see part II of this guideline.

18 Theoretical education (Example, module A1)
A Items for the theoretical education teaching hours recommended A.1 Using electricity for arc welding (2h) Objective: know the principle of arc welding Scope: basics of electricity • nature of the electric arc the arc as heat source • arc power basic terminology for welds • welding processes welding consumables • metal transfer; weld metal formation of the weld pool

19 Approval of the schools Requirements to become an ATB (in Sweden)
The syllabus shall fulfill the IW guideline for theoretical and practical education Teachers/Instructors: IWS diploma, EN 287 or ISO 9606 welders approval certificate, proof of teaching ability Literature: shall cover the IW guideline Welder training workshop: one booth per student, fully equipped, well ventilated Welding equipment: adequate for the processes taught, routine for maintenance and validation A quality manual Examination: the school shall have at least one authorized examiner

20 International welder diplomas

21 A Swedish Road Map for joining was prepared 2006
Resulted in seven strategic goals for joining in Sweden One of the seven goals were Secure supply of qualified welders through better education

22 Strategic goal: Secure supply of qualified welders through better education
Problem: Major shortage of qualified welders Solution: Implement the International Welder education in national vocational education

23 Implementation of International Welder Education in the Swedish national Education systems
Type of school Welding students/year Authority Upper secondary school 600 The Swedish National Agency for Education Higher vocational education 50 Swedish Agency for Higher Vocational Education Labour market training courses 1200 Swedish Public Employment Service

24 Implementation of International Welder Education in the Swedish national Education systems
Project activities: Information to authorities (lobbying, committee work) Information to schools (seminars, webpage, quality manual, brochures, consulting) Information to industry (brochures) Information to students (advertisements, brochures, webpage)

25 Quality manual for xx School International
A model quality manual Quality manual for xx School International Welder education (IW) The model quality manual is available on

26 Recruitment folder for students
This folder is given to all upper secondary schools with welding education

27 Recruitment folder for students

28 Implementation of International Welder Education in the Swedish national Education systems
Project results: Welding is a specialization in the upper secondary school. The IW education modules fits exactly in the national curriculum All schools running labour market training curses in welding must be an ATB for International Welder. Requirement set by the authority. Increased number of ATBs and fairly high number of welding students leaving with an International Welder diploma (approx 500/year). The ”welding community” speaks more and more about International Welder

29 Number of International Welder diplomas in Sweden

30 Totally 4175 International Welder diplomas issued
Totally 70 approved schools, ATBs 23 upper secondary schools 1 school for higher vocational education 46 schools for labour market training courses

31 Implementation of International Welder Education in the Swedish national Education systems
Positive side-effect: The welding teachers today have higher knowledge (IWS). That has given them higher status.

32 Implementation of International Welder Education in the Swedish national Education systems
Remaining questions to solve: IW-education is more expensive for the schools than ordinary welding education Still many welding companies do not know the International Welder education

33 Brochure for welding companies

34 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Extensive practical skill and theoretical knowledge

35 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Strong quality approach to work

36 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Has performed and passed several welders approval tests

37 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Short start-up time at the new job

38 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Internationally harmonised training and diplomas

39 Employ an International Welder - five good reasons
Ask for the IW diploma next time you employ a welder

40 Thank you!
