2 Geography is the study of the earth’s surface, land, features, and people.

3 5 Themes of Geography:  Location: There are two types of location – Absolute Location and Relative Location. 1. Absolute Location – is the exact point where lines of longitude and latitude meet. 2. Relative Location – is the location of one place in relation to another place.

4 5 Themes of Geography  Place: physical and human characteristics that make it different than all other places  Regions: area that share similar characteristics

5 5 Themes of Geography  Movement: this explains how and why people and things are connected  Human-Environment Interaction: the relationship between people and their environment

6 Brainstorm examples of each theme (5-10 minutes)  Location  Place  Regions  Movement  Human-Environment Interactions

7 Location: Cardinal Directions North East South West Intermediate Directions Northeast Southeast Northwest Southwest

8 Places: Human Characteristics Clothing Cities Buildings Languages Agriculture Holidays Religion Physical Characteristics Landforms Terrains Wildlife Climate Vegetation

9 Regions: Formal Regions Governmental boundaries: these type of boundaries cannot be disputed. These type of boundaries include cities, countries, counties, etc. Vernacular Regions Peoples perceptions: these type of boundaries are loosely defined by people’s own opinion. An example: middle east, in the south, etc.

10 Movement: The import and export of good and mass communications. Such as……… Travel, trade, emails, telephone, radio, internet, etc.

11 Human-Environment Interactions: Humans adapt, modify, and depend on their environment. It is consistently changing by our actions. People depend on food, shelter, clothing, etc. People modify by building dames, schools, parks, dig mines, etc. People adapt by changing their way of living to conform to their environment.
