2 At-Home Support READ! Read to your child, read with your child, have your child read to you, model good reading habits yourself Study Space- create a quiet space in your home for your child to work Talk to your child- set aside some time each evening to talk about the day and upcoming events

3 Language Arts: Reading This year we will continue to use a curriculum called Benchmark Literacy. MAP scores and DRA testing determine individual needs. Students will participate in reading groups at their reading level or dealing with a skill they are learning. Daily reading is the key to becoming a better reader!

4 Language Arts: Writing Students will write personal narratives, realistic fiction stories, persuasive letters, informational reports and procedural texts. Each day a lesson will be taught and time to write will be provided. Students write at their own pace.

5 Language Arts: Spelling/Phonics Along with reading, our spelling/phonics is also from Benchmark Literacy. Students will have nine spelling words each week the majority of the school year. One to four challenge words may be added, but will not affect your child’s grade. We will also be monitoring spelling progress during the school year in student’s every day writing. Second graders are required to write 100 high frequency words by the end of the year.

6 Report card grading Reads with accuracy- read grade level text, use strategies, self correct reading errors Reads with fluency- read grade level text fluently and with expression, high frequency words Comprehends a variety of text- use prior learning, sequence events, identify topic, make predictions, summarize, follow directions Applies the writing process- write with purpose, variety of writing, stay on topic, sequence, revise and edit Applies grammar and mechanics- apply knowledge in writing, complete sentences, correct punctuation Demonstrates proper manuscript- appropriate spaces, clear and neat writing

7 Math Math series “Expressions”Expressions Username: FirstLast Password: Student ID Number (Lunch Number) Typical math lesson: whole group lesson, try sample problems as a class and then individual or small group work There will be homework most nights. Please review addition and subtraction facts at home each night using school supplied flash cards.

11 ENCORE Every day we have a 30-minute block of time that all second graders will participate in. During this time, we will focus on intervention and enrichment activities to meet the individual needs of each student.
