Enrollment Types Open EnrollmentGroups ProgramsOpen Enrollment - Restricted Students sign up for course on their own, and they don’t know the other students on course (usually). Sometimes friends or family sign up together. A group (such as LCSD) brings an intact group to COBS for specific programs and goals. Can be very custom within some parameters. Like open enrollment, but restricted to a group type. For example, we do open enrollment courses for Veterans.

Three Options for GOL! Scholarships for Open Enrollment GroupsCombined Program = Groups + Open Enrollment Pros Very easy for COBS = Less expensive Infrastructure already exists Students meet other students from all walks of life No partner program required (can be a pro and a con) Students know each other so, they can support transference of learning Very easy for COBS – we already do this Can target specific Lake County needs and goals COBS is good at custom programming Most innovative option Cons Can be more challenging for under-resourced students; best if paired w/ support pre and post course May not meet Lake Count specific needs No partner program required (can be a pro and a con) May not feel as unique as open enrollment Requires a partner program More expensive Will take more energy from COBS $-$$$ $ - $200/student/day (very flexible spending) $$ - About $200/person/day (more of a fixed rate for the group) $$$ - (would require administrative investment in planning and designing)

A Custom Idea…”Lake County Ascent Program” Phase 1 – “8 th Grade Expedition” Phase 2 – “Adventure Camp” 9 th ’12 th grade Phase 3 – “COBS Course Scholarship” 9 th ’12 th grade Phase 4 – “Employment” 20 y/o+ Summary3-day Course at Leadville Basecamp for all lake County 8 th Graders. Individuals Apply for Scholarships to Open Enrollment Courses Employment at COBS, likely during summer while going to college or pursuing other education (good, local, summer jobs) GoalExposure to COBS and Outdoor Recreation Reinforce Expeditionary Learning Principles in LCSD Learn the basics Deepen experience with outdoor adventure and COBS outcomes Fun with friends Apply experience with new group Meet other students from all over the world Apply skills to a new job Work with Lake County youth, and beyond Diversify COBS staff to better serve diverse students Cost Est.$600/person$200/person/day Total: $4,800 per student $190/person/day 22 Days = $4,180 Our staff start around $73/day, and can climb to about $152/day in about 6 years. Could work as instructors, logistics staff, or eventually administrators Total Cost for 3-Phase Participation: $9,580/Student (Our 81-day Semester costs $12,195)

Phase 1 “8 th Grade Expedition” Phase 2 “Adventure Camp” Phase 3 “COBS Course Scholarship” # Participants8010/season10/Year Cost/Participant$600$4,800$4,180 (for a 22-day course) Annual Sub Total: $159,400 Est. Cost$48,000$57,600$41,800 Part Time Staff Addition and Training = $12,000 Ascent Cost Estimate

Why the Ascent Program? Good ReasonsChallenges COBS already has a blossoming “Ascent” Partnerships similar to this with 3 Denver schools: Combines the best of Groups Programs and Open Enrollment Offers a pathway to employment Enhances Expeditionary Learning culture at LCSD Create 2-4 more full time jobs in Lake County Cost COBS will need to design some staff positions that are custom to this (this would be terrific for our staff, though). Recruiting Lake County students and partner coordination  Denver School of Science and Technology  Strive Preparatory Academy

What will this give Lake County youth? We want to give our children… Healthy, Fun Activities for life long enjoyment and to support healthy choices in adolescence. Positive Life Skills: Communication, Teamwork, Self Awareness, Confidence, familiarity with Colorado Activities, Physical Fitness, and more! Academic Skills: studies show that without character traits like Grit and Teamwork, it is hard to complete college – especially for 1 st generation students. Standing out on college applications and job applications: Leadership, Perseverance, Creativity, and more! World-wide brand recognition: schools and employers recognize “Outward Bound.” Positive Mentors: Outward Bound Instructors are positive role models and can be references on job and school applications.

COBS’ Niche in GOL! Winter Programs (we have the infrastructure and staff training) Technical Activities:  Rock Climbing  Ice Climbing  Snow and Glacier Mountaineering  High Ropes Course  Rafting  Technical Canyoneering Fantastic Campus for Outdoor Education and Camping Trips Enhance Expeditionary Learning (EL is based on the Outward Bound educational model –in fact they used to be called “Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound Schools”) Experience with outdoor programs for ages 12 and up Experience with highly custom programs Pathway to a job Lots of public land permits all over the US COBS is a well established organization: over 50 years of Colorado programming Educator training
