Assessment in Common Core

Essential Questions How is CAASPP different than STAR? How is SBAC different than CST? What do students have to know and be able to do to be successful on Common Core assessments?

Agenda Share information about the changes in assessment (content and structure) Explore online assessments and websites to support student learning

Then and Now CST - ThenSBAC - Now Assessed CA State StandardsAssesses Common Core Standards Assessed students in grades 2-11Assesses students in grades 3-8 and 11 Lower level of text complexityHigher level of text complexity Levels of Cognition Recall and Reproduction Basic Skills & Concepts Levels of Cognition Recall and Reproduction Basic Skills & Concepts Critical Thinking Problem Solving

Levels of Cognition - Depth of Knowledge DOK-1 Recall and Reproduction Recall of a fact, term, principle, concept, or perform a routine procedure DOK-2 Application of Skills/ Concepts Use of information, conceptual knowledge, select appropriate procedures for a task, two or more steps with decision points along the way, routine problems, organize/display data, interpret/use simple graphs DOK-3 Strategic Thinking Requires reasoning, developing a plan or sequence of steps to approach problem; requires some decision making and justification; abstract, complex, or non-routine; often more than one possible answer or approach DOK-4 Extended Thinking An original investigation or application to real world; requires time to research, problem solve, and process multiple conditions of the problem or task; non- routine manipulations, across disciplines/content areas/multiple sources

Then and Now SBAC

DOK Name the capital of California. DOK 1: Recall and Reproduction

DOK Na me the capitals of three other states. DOK 1: Recall and Reproduction

DOK Compare and contrast two state capitals from your list. DOK 2: Application of Skills/Concepts

DOK Evaluate the location of Sacramento as your state capital. DOK 3: Strategic Thinking

DOK Theorize possible impacts of moving your state capital to San Francisco. DOK 4: Extended Thinking

How is DOK Addressed at Bubb? Engage NY Problem of the Month Text-dependent questions Multiple sources for writing Number Talks Research

Then and Now CSTSBAC Response Types - Bubble in Scantron Sheets Response Types - Keyboarding skills, drag & drop, navigation Multiple ChoiceSelected Response (Multiple choice and multiple correct) Constructed Response (Students enter a word, phrase, sentence, number, set of numbers. May cover more than 1 standard) Extended Response (Elaborate answers and explanations) Technology Enhanced (Select text, reorder test, draw lines, graph, etc.) Performance Task (Integrates knowledge and skills across multiple standards, reflects real world tasks/Occurs across multiple sittings)

How will student success be measured on the SBAC? Both ELA and math will have an overall score and 4 sub scores based on 4 claims. The claims will be scored on a scale of 1-4: 4: Thoroughly proficient 3: Proficient 2: Approaching Proficient 1: Minimally Proficient Based on the Spring Field Test performed in 2014, the SBAC has estimated that the great majority of students will perform at a level 2 or 1 on the upcoming test. 23 Math Claims Overall Claim for Grades 3–8 “Students can demonstrate progress toward college and career readiness in mathematics.” Claim 1:Concepts & Procedures “Students can explain and apply mathematical concepts and interpret and carry out mathematical procedures with precision and fluency.” Claim 2:Problem Solving “Students can solve a range of complex well-posed problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of knowledge and problem solving strategies.” Claim 3: Communicating Reasoning “Students can clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and to critique the reasoning of others.” Claim 4: Modeling and Data Analysis “Students can analyze complex, real-world scenarios and can construct and use mathematical models to interpret and solve problems.”
