2 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION *Subpart F- Specifications for the Humane Handling, Care and Treatment, and Transportation of Warm- blooded Animals -Facilities, general -Structural strength -Water/power -Storage -Waste disposal -Washroom and sinks

3 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION *Facilities, Indoor/outdoor -Ambient temp. -Ventilation -Lighting -Drainage -Shelter from sun -Inclement weather -Perimeter fence

4 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION *Space requirements -Enclosures shall be constructed to provide sufficient space to allow each animal to make normal postural and social adjustments with adequate freedom of movement

6 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION * Transportation Standards -Primary enclosures used to transport live animals 1. Strength 2. Free from protrusions 3. Easy access in case of emergencies 4. Ventilation

7 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION * Primary conveyances (motor vehicle, rail, air, and marine) Designed/constructed to protect the health, ensure safety/comfort at all times -Supply of air sufficient for normal breathing of each animal -Same species transport

8 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION TRANSPORTATION cont. Maintained in compatible groups. Socially dependent animals must be allowed visual and olfactory contact Any female in estrus shall not be transported in the same primary enclosure with any male animal Primary enclosures used to transport live animals shall have solid bottoms to prevent leakage in shipment Enclosure shall contain clean litter of a suitable absorbent material which is safe and non-toxic, sufficient quantity to absorb and cover excreta Documents accompanying the shipment shall be attached in a accessible manner

9 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION * Primary Conveyances -The animal cargo spaces of primary conveyances used in transporting live animals shall be designed and constructed to protect the health, And ensure safety and comfort of the live animals contained therein at all times

10 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION * USDA’s Code of Federal Regulation and International Animal Transportation Authority (IATA) are the guidelines that Veterinary Services follow when shipping animals by air. *ITATA requirements -Construction

Construction requirements-well construction, give handlers protection from the animals Ventilation requirements-adequately ventilated-especially on the top of container Safety requirements- keep animal inside at all time, not cause damage to animal itself Animal Welfare and Health requirements-suitable for species being shipped, allow to stand, turn and lie down Food and water requirements

12 USDA SENEPOL CONVENTION Inspection of Vessels and Accommodations Accommodations for humane treatment of animals on ocean vessels Cleaning and disinfection of transport carriers for export Inspection of ocean vessels prior to loading Ventilation Protection from heat of boilers and engines Attendants

13 USDA SENEPOL Space Requirements CONVENTION Space requirements for animals on ocean vessels THIS IS WHAT USDA WANTS TO AVOID Final determination of space needed & manner of loading of animals for export shipment will be made by the inspector or APHIS veterinarian at the port of embarkation based upon size/type of animal presented/weather, destination, route, and means of transportation employed for the export shipment
