Target: I will be able to describe what conception is, and where and how it occurs Pg. 31 The Process of Pregnancy: 1. An egg is released into the fallopian tube and stays there for about 24 hours waiting for fertilization.

2. Fertilization (Conception): When sperm and egg unite (typically in the fallopian tubes) Creates a zygote: a single fertilized cell

At this instant, the baby’s genes and sex are set. If the sperm has a Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy. If it has an X chromosome it will be a girl.

This begins the process of Pregnancy: a period of having a child developing in the uterus 6 weeks 12 weeks

3. The zygote begins to divide and becomes a cluster of cells called a Blastocyst

4. The blastocyst travels towards the uterus which takes 3-4 days and implants itself on the wall of the uterus.

5. Once implanted, it is an Embryo: an unborn offspring from conception until the end of 2 months of development where all of the organ systems are developing.

6. After week 8, the baby is known as a Fetus: an unborn baby from the 9 th week after conception until birth; indicating that all organ systems are in place 7. Through the rest of the pregnancy, the fetus will continue to develop and be supported by the umbilical cord, placenta, and amniotic sac.

Umbilical Cord: a rope like structure that connects the embryo to the placenta. Placenta: an organ that attaches to the wall of the uterus and umbilical cord, that consists of a network of blood vessels which carries nutrients, oxygen, and wastes between the developing fetus and the mother.

Amniotic Sac: a protective pouch surrounding the fetus Crash Course- Fertilization Conception Summary:

HOW BABIES ARE MADE Put down 6 post it notes onto the page 1. On the top of the post-it note, draw pictures to represent what is happening in each of the 7 steps of the process of pregnancy (Combine steps 3 and 4) 2. On the notebook paper below each post-it, write what’s happening in each step *Use a minimum of 4 colors. Pg. 30
