1 Lord of the Flies Essay Reminders 1. Rough Draft Peer Edit Due 11/18-19 **This will be a completion grade. This needs to be a fully completed draft. Intro, Conclusion, 2 Body Paragraphs (with ALL quotes), and a Works Cited. 2. Final Draft Due 11/20 **Turnitin.com submission due by 7:25am ** Printed copy due in class BOTH copies must be submitted ON TIME. NO EXCUSES! If you have a last minute printer issue, you MUST email me a copy of your paper BEFORE you come to class.

4 What needs to be completed today: O Work on commentary and intro/conclusion planning of essay. O Make sure you write AT LEAST two sentences of commentary per quote. O Look at the Writing Basics Packet for introduction/conclusion tips. O Reminder: Library time tomorrow. You can only be at a computer if your shaping sheet is complete.

5 Introductions It is a good introduction, but the writer forgot to cite the quote. Your introduction will be an additional 2-3 sentences BEFORE your thesis statement. 1. Attention grabber 2. Bridge 3. Thesis Notice how the next 2 sentences make a connection between the attention grabber and the thesis.

6 What can you use as an attention grabber? 1. Startling information (must be true and verifiable) 2. Anecdote (must be short, to the point, and relevant to the topic) 3. Open with a quotation 4. Summary/Background Information (Each sentence should become more specific as you build to your thesis) 5. Specific Detail Opening DON’T DO THIS: 1. The truism (this is the most common error that I see in student introductions) 2. The obvious dictionary definition 3. Facts no one needs to be reminded of 4. Broad/boring clichés 5. An announcement of the content (In this paper I will..._

7 Conclusion Notice it restates the thesis but isn’t an identical mimic This ultimately became the title of the paper. Consider phrases from your own writing when creating your unique title. Your conclusion should simply review the main points of your paper (just be careful to not restate them exactly). Your conclusion is a good place to make a useful analogy or comparison.

8 Commentary Topic Sentence Notice how the commentary identifies the literary device, but it DOES NOT STOP THERE. Simply stating, “This quote shows diction by Golding” is insufficient.
