1 Service Activities on Fridays at Whittier Elementary BE RESPONSIBLE, SHOW UP ON TIME WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE AND BE ACCOUNTABLE BECAUSE WE ARE THE ONES TEACHING SOCIAL SKILLS, LEADERSHIP, AND RESPECT WHILE PLAYING SOCCER AND THE STUDENTS RELY ON US TO BE THERE Be knowledgeable and helpful while setting up and playing, and award and promote positive behavior Manage the students playing time, attitude, and take disciplinary actions when needed Create valuable and meaningful relationships to understand the students and let them understand you Be a good role model to promote good behavior and communication within the school and the community Meaning/Discussion: Service learning is not something that should be seen as a job but more of a privilege. During the week in the classroom we learn about Title I students and students with exceptionalities. Whittier Elementary has over 90% Title I students currently enrolled. We have learned of mental, behavioral, ELL, and financially challenged students. Seeing these students and being with these students is an honor as well as a learning experience. Finding ways to relate and understand each student and teach them is an invaluable trait for someone pursing a teaching career. Service learning gives the students a chance to catch up, work with others, and exceed socially with the help of the service learning group and that’s why the relationships we create are so valuable. After having the students work all week catching up or getting ahead on their school work, soccer is an excellent reward. Of all the sports it shows a great amount teamwork, social skills, and responsibilities. These are all beneficial characteristics necessary to succeed in the classroom and to benefit our community. Service Information:  Ed-Sped 350, Spring 2010  Dr. Michael Humphrey  S.C.O.R.E. with school  The mission was to, “provide activities and mentoring in under-served primary schools in the state of Idaho and to provide a supplemental program that effectively integrates the positive elements of athletic participation with the critical need for enhanced reading, language and study skills.”  My service project purpose was to have me promote and provide a positive attitude for the students. They would be able to use this not only in school but in the community as well. I was also there to promote teamwork and to build their self confidence.  The learning goal for my Ed-Sped 350 class was: “This SL project was intended to assist the candidates in gaining a deeper insight into students with exceptionalities and the resources and organizations which strive to enhance their post-secondary outcomes, educational services, social services, and/or familial services.” –Dr. Humphrey Reflection : Service learning through Boise State was one of the best experiences I have had in my time spent at the university. The SCORE program was an excellent choice to volunteer for. They promote schoolwork during the week and they are rewarded with soccer on Fridays. Soccer is a great game because it is a very universal game with hidden lessons. In my Ed-Sped 350 class we had learned about ways to teach students with exceptionalities. We have learned different techniques about how to approach and teach these students in our future classroom. Service learning puts you right in the middle of real-life situations we will see in the future. I was scared at times and I am sure that the students were too. By working together with the service learning program and with the students I was able to create valuable and meaningful relationships with the students and we all learned from each other. I tried hard to be a good role model and display good characteristics that hopefully would give them a good example to follow and positive influence in their lives. They taught me everyone is unique and we are all capable of learning no matter how long it takes.
