POETRY INTRODUCTION POETIC DEVICES, RHYME, AND METAPHOR

WARM UP In your journal, identify the different types of rhymes that are commonly used in the English language.

OBJECTIVE AND UPCOMING EVENTS SWBAT analyze poetry by using the analysis chart to identify use of poetic and literary devices. Multigenre project topics due next week (15 th /16 th ) Vocab Quiz on Thursday/Friday

TYPES OF RHYMES There are four commonly used types of rhymes in the English language: Exact Rhyme Slant Rhyme End Rhyme Internal Rhyme

EXACT RHYME Exact rhyme is the repetition of the same stressed vowel sound as well as any consonant sounds that follow the vowel. An example of this is pairing now and cow. The exact same vowel sound is repeated with no change in consonant sounds after the vowel sound. Only the n and the c sounds differ, as they appear before the repeated vowel sound. Spelling does not have to be exact, it is only the sound created that matters in exact rhyme.

SLANT RHYME Also referred to as half rhyme, imperfect rhyme, slant rhyme, near rhyme, or oblique rhyme. Defined as a rhyme in which the stressed syllables of ending consonants match, however the preceding vowel sounds do not match. If love is like a bridge or maybe like a grudge, and time is like a river that kills us with a shiver, then what have all these mornings meant but aging into love? What now is straight must have been bent; what now is whole must have been rent. My hand is now your glove. (To My Wife, by George Wolff)

END RHYME The most common form of exact rhyme poets use is end rhyme. End rhyme occurs when the final word in a line rhymes with another final word of a different line. If ever two were one, then surely we. If ever man were loved by wife, then thee; If ever wife was happy in a man, Compare with me, ye women, if you can. I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold Or all the riches that the East doth hold. My love is such I can no way repay, The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray. Then while we live, in love let's so persevere That when we live no more, we may live ever. (To My Dear and Loving Husband, Anne Bradstreet)

INTERNAL RHYME Internal rhyme is when a poet uses rhyming words within one line of a poem. Dizzying and deafening the ear with its sound. Dividing and gliding and sliding, And falling and brawling and sprawling… (From Robert Southey's poem The Cataract of Lodore)

THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POEMS We will be studying three major types of poems in this class: Free Verse Lyric Narrative

FREE VERSE 1. Free verse poems have no regular meter and rhythm 2. They do not follow a proper rhyme scheme as such (but may have some rhyming—the key is that is does not have a scheme) 3. This type of poem is based on normal pauses and natural rhythmical phrases as compared to the artificial constraints of normal poetry A noiseless patient spider, I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated, Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding, It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself, Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them. And you O my soul where you stand, Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,……. Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold, Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul. (A Noiseless, Patient Spider by Walt Whitman)

LYRIC POEMS Expresses the personal emotions or thoughts of the speaker Lyric poems are usually short and in first-person point of view, which means the speaker is involved in the poem. Sometime the speaker/narrator is not identified There is always some specific mood or emotion being expressed. Frequently that mood is about the extremes in life, mostly love or death or some other intense emotional experience. No matter the theme, though, all lyric poems are known for brevity, emotional intensity and musical quality.

NARRATIVE POEMS A form of poetry that tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metered verse Examples include The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, The Odyssey and The Illiad
