1 Welcome to Year 5 SPRING TERM! Community Champions

2 Being a Community Champion in Year 5 means your child will help… all classes with important duties (being recycling monitors, helping with displays) School environment (litter, gardening…) adults in the school (helping other teachers with important tasks, showing parents around) younger children with reading and maths (buddy class) Support school with ‘Rights Respecting School’ Status

3 Literacy Myths and Legends- Re create our own Ancient Greek Myths Working alongside year 6 and the Young Shakespeare company on: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Ongoing focus on guided reading (20 minutes every day) spellings, grammar, handwriting (New scheme=-Penpals)

4 Maths 1.Number (Place value, operations, fractions) 2.Measurement (Estimating, calculating, conversion, time) 3. Geometry: Properties of Shape & Position and Direction (Identifying Shapes, Drawing, Comparing and Classifying, Angles 4. Statistics 5. Using and applying – problem solving, reasoning, real life situations. THROUGHOUT 6. Times tables of the month! * Whole school focus on times tables and **Alternating Mathletics homework and written maths problems New curriculum! Simpler to follow but tougher

5 Science The two topics for this term are; Forces Earth and Space

6 History Ancient Greeks To place Ancient Greek period in history Athens and Sparta Battle of Marathon The influence of Greeks to modern life Map work, timelines, artefacts, culture and civilisation, links with literacy

7 Art/D.T. Sculpture project on types of containers (freizes, linked to Ancient Greeks ) using clay F.A.B. Painting

8 P.E. Invasion games - strategies to applying skills in game situations Hockey

9 P.S.H.E. and R.E. Rights Respecting Schools Role models, Feelings Continued discussion and work around social issues, e.g. peer pressure, bullying etc. Judaism and God; Islam and Pilgrimage PLUS: Building Learning Power - Managing distractions

10 Building Learning Power It’s at the heart of our school vision - we want all our children to become better learners and to develop growth mindsets We will be working on 4 keys aspects of children’s learning: being resilient, resourceful, reflective and showing reciprocity

11 Building Learning Power This year we are focusing on being resilient Last term we encouraged children to develop their perseverance This term we are encouraging children to manage distractions We will be covering this in lessons, in assemblies and through the learning environment

15 Primary Languages Year 5 Camden French Scheme of Work A new language assistant Revision of current knowledge Developing vocabulary, extending written sentences and conversations – using real life situations Special focus on pronunciation Trip to Paris

16 Brookfield is a Level 1 Rights Respecting School Human Rights… for kids! Your children have these rights. They include: The right to an education The right to be safe The right to seek medical attention when needed The right to play The right to have rights! There are 45 articles that should be respected by adults, with the government respecting another 9 articles. To find out more please take a leaflet at the end or google UNCRC.

17 Homework One page of comments in Reading diary (not Fronter!) Maths / Mathletics (alternating) Literacy/Topic task Spellings/Timestables revision (alternating) 15 minutes reading a day at least four times a week 3 x research / art projects, 1 per term.
