3  Robot – A mechanical or virtually intelligent agent that can perform tasks automatically or with guidance, typically by remote control ◦ Usually electric machine ◦ Has some ability to interact with physical objects ◦ Given electronic programming to do specific tasks, or task range ◦ Ability to perceive, absorb, and process data ◦ Serves a purpose, has uses

4  Sub-categories of Robots ◦ Android – Robot or synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human ◦ Cyborg (Cybernetic Organism) – A being with both biological and artificial or robotic parts ◦ Modern Robots – A robot that has an intended use for assisting in everyday life ◦ Military Robots – Robots intended to be used during wartime events in order to save human lives

5  Artificial Intelligence – Intelligence of machines and the branch of Computer Sciences that aims to create it ◦ The study and design of intelligent agents ◦ Gives machines the ability to become intelligent ◦ Allows dynamic learning throughout a machines experiences ◦ Many methods and approaches of creating artificial intelligence including:  Cybernetics and brain simulation  Symbolic  Behavior based  Statistical

6  Googlebot – The search bot software used by Google ◦ Collects documents from the web to build a searchable index for the Google search engine ◦ Checks index to determine the most relevant search results ◦ Three processes:  Crawling – The process that Googlebot uses to discover new and updated pages to be added to the Google searchable index  Indexing – The process that Googlebot uses to add the pages found while crawling  Serving – The algorithm that determines how relevant the search results are to the end user

9  PETMAN – Anthropomorphic robot originally intended for the use of testing chemical protection clothing ◦ Has ability to walk upright on two feet ◦ Does not need to be supported ◦ Self-balancing ◦ Has sensors that simulate human physiology like controlling internal temperature, humidity and sweating

11  SandFlea – A small RC car type robot developed by Boston Dynamics for the US Army’s Rapid Equipping Force ◦ Drives like an RC car on flat terrain, but can use its actuator to jump up to 30 feet in the air ◦ Uses gyro stabilization to stay level during flight, ensuring a smooth landing ◦ Able to jump up to 25 times on one charge of its batteries

13  Cheetah – Four-footed robot developed by Boston Dynamics for DARPA’s Maximum Mobility and Manipulation program ◦ Gallops at 18 mph, setting a world record for legged robots ◦ Mimics the dynamics of actual Cheetahs running ◦ Can run on a treadmill while supported by a chain hanging from a hook in the ceiling

15  BigDog – Rough-terrain robot developed by Boston Dynamics for the Tactical Technology Office at DARPA ◦ Walks, runs, climbs and carries a heavy payload (300 pounds) ◦ Powered by internal engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system ◦ About the size of a small mule, 3 feet long, 2.5 feet tall, weighs 240 pounds ◦ Utilizes a variety of sensors to balance, navigate and regulate its energetics as conditions vary
