2 Welcome to Class  Please sign in  Please turn in your paper if you are not submitting electronically  Please get a snack  Please discuss with your table group which is most important in language acquisition: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation  We will be starting at 4:10

3 Objectives I can explain the importance of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation in acquiring a second language by reading, discussing and creating a chant, poem, or song.

4 Background Information ~ Grammar Why is grammar important? Discuss at your table how understanding grammar can help a student acquire English as a second language?

5 Background Information ~ Grammar  Teaching of explicit grammar rules can make connections between words and therefore make acquisition easier and sometimes faster.  Teaching grammar activates knowledge that is already there making acquisition easier. (Krashen)  Raises language awareness.

6 Background Information ~ Vocabulary Why is vocabulary important? Popcorn out why vocabulary is important.

7 Background Information ~ Vocabulary How should we teach vocabulary to ELLs?  Teach complexity of words for understanding  Teach every day and basic words first  Teach relationships in words – make connections  Teach more complex words through meaning  Practice strategically and meaningfully  Use L1 meanings when possible  Teach and practice within context

8 Background Information ~ Pronunciation Why is pronunciation important? Think it in your head, one minute partner share, write it on a sticky, pick one sticky to share

9 Background Information ~ Pronunciation  You can teach discrimination of sounds, syllables, intonation, etc.  Impacts use of L2  Can impact reading comprehension and writing  Usually falls into place in children by end of CALPS

10 Creativity……..Here we come!!!!  Your group will be assigned either chapter 2,3,or 4  You will write a chant, song, or poem about the main ideas from your chapter  Your chant, poem, or song should be from a Christmas tune  Be ready to share in 45 minutes

11 WIDA (To the tune of Jingle Bells) Understanding language is not an easy thing, Standards came and saved us and made us want to sing. Listening, speaking, reading, and don’t forget to write, Combine all these and ELLs will learn English all right. WIDA, WIDA, WIDA, WIDA, WIDA saved us all, I teach language all day long, don’t we all-l? WIDA, WIDA, WIDA, WIDA, WIDA saved us all, We will pass the ACCESS test and exit before Fall, YAY!

12 ‘Twas the Week Before Christmas ‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the cohort, Not a student was focused, if only class would be short? Our instructor was focused, she wanted us to stay, But all we could think of was, tomorrow is FRIDAY! We are soon off for break, three glorious weeks, No more children, no more school, time off our feet. Please stop the madness, please let us go, Please let us go and have fun in the snow. Wait, what is this, can it be true? Has she granted our wish, to this studious crew? Then she stood up and said with such wisdom and kindness, “Merry Christmas to all, good night, and God Bless!”
