Introduction to computers OBJ Identify parts and uses of a computer

IPOS Input-hardware that enters data into the computer Processing-changes raw data into instructions for the computer. Output-shows results of processing Storage- holds data

Parts of a Computer Monitor CPU Keyboard Mouse Printer Disk Drive

CPU Other names –Central Processing Unit –Microprocessor –The “brain” of the computer Functions –Allows millions of calculations per second –Makes possible to write letters –Makes possible to balance checkbook Processing Device

Monitor Shows a “soft copy” of output –Soft copy means non-paper Used to show computer images Output device

Printer Used to make a “hard copy” of output –Hard copy means paper copy Types of Printers –Impact-strikes the paper Dot Matrix-prints many dots close together to form a character or image –Non Impact Inkjet-shoots ink through nozzles to produce images and characters Laser-uses heat to produce images and characters Output Device

Keyboard Used to enter letters into the computer Also contains numbers and symbols Input Device

Mouse Used to move the cursor and pointer around screen –Cursor-flashing line that indicates where data entered will appear Used to select items on the screen Input Device

Disk Drive Used to store information on a disk. Examples: –Floppy Drive –Hard drive –Zip Drive –Flash Drive Storage Device

Networks Network- Two or more computers connected together –May share files and printers LAN-Local Area network –Within an organization –Ex. Within Burgaw Middle School WAN-Wide Area network –Network between computers miles or thousands of miles apart –Ex. The entire school system is networked (ie: all the schools; board of education)

More Vocabulary Server: A special computer used to store programs and files and then sends it out to other computers one or all at a time. Stand alone computer: A computer that does not rely on another computer or network.

Other Computer Hardware Cell Phones Digital Cameras Barcode Scanner Handhelds (PDA’s) Optical Storage Devices (CD, DVD) GPS (Global Positioning System)
