3  Does you mind wander while you are listening ?  Do you listen too hard?  Do you jump to conclusions before listening to the entire message?  Do you concentrate on how the speaker looks and speaks

4  If you answered yes to all four questions, well you are a poor listener.  I hope at the end of this lecture you will become a better listener

5  There is a very big difference between hearing and listening.

6  Lucas (2004) defines hearing as “the vibration of sound waves on the ear drum and the firing of electrochemical impulses in the brain.” hearingear

7  In other words the sound goes to the ear and the brain allows you to understand the specific word or sentence you need to hear.

8  Listening is making a deliberate effort to make sense of what we hear.

9 Critical Listening Appreciative Listening Empathic Listening Comprehensive Listening

10 Critical Listening Listening to make sure if we should accept or reject the message

11 Listening for pleasure or enjoyment

12  Listening so we can provide emotional support for the speaker

13  Making sure there are no distractions to prevent you from making a genuine effort to understand the speaker’s point of view

14  Listening to understand the message of a speaker

15  Now that you know the definitions for Hearing Critical Listening Appreciative Listening Emphatic Listening Comprehensive Listening  Now that you are aware of what listening entails, let us see if you can apply these skills

16  We now know that we should not focus on the speaker’s  delivery  appearance So in order to do this we have to  take listening seriously  resist distractions  be an active listener  focus on your listening- the message  suspend judgment- don’t jump to conclusions

17  So now listen so you can write good notes  Try the worksheet on the next power point  Come to class to discuss your answers
