4 The background for change Feb 2014 –an email to Staffordshire Heads regarding a meeting with the schools commissioner - Frank Green – and the Staffordshire LA stated that: "no academy would be allowed to stand alone", with "clusters of five to 10 schools led by an external sponsor or, as there are insufficient external sponsors, an outstanding school“ “a remit to convert all schools to academies before the end of the next Parliament (although this could be within the next 2-3 years)" http://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/may/27/new-school-commissioner- plan-all-schools-academies

5 The background for change Alex Hopkins – director for Education Northamptonshire – no future standalone school LEA 2019 David Cameron ring-fenced school budgets but there will be a reduction in grants year on year

6 Background for change DFE is committed to a move away from a ‘service’ led approach to a ‘sector’ led approach by Sept 2016 To validate Frank Green– the DfE is also stating that single schools should form collaborations to ensure sustainability

10 Aim is school improvement through training & key school alliances Develop the teachers & leaders of the future – covering ITT, CPD, leadership training, school-to-school support, SLEs and research & development. Fairfields School – we are a strategic partner… Teaching Schools

11 NLE/NSS Outstanding heads who work to support and improve other schools They support alone/alongside their staff/ their staff support school We are one of first 1000 (only another 400 to have) and we already generating income from it

12 Academy Chains Sponsor & converter chains Sponsor academy chains take on schools with an aim to raise standards Develop capacity systematically through joint practice development Create a financial sustainability in terms of costs shared across schools & purchasing power/ Accountabile for educational improvement of all schools within the chain Teaching school s & NLES contained within academy chains

14 In short Every indicator is suggesting that the school will need to find a different direction for the future. Luckily, we’re in a good place to choose our direction. Any questions?????

16 Possible options for the future Stand alone school with increasing income streams from training Stand alone with increasing income streams for training and dedicated leadership support to other schools Or, a movement towards a collaboration informally/formally with other schools

17 Collaboration options An informal collaboration could be with local schools to reduce costs A formal collaboration could be with local schools or not, as a federation or multi academy trust Or we could become a body that opens new schools e.g. free schools

18 Questions/ discussion for previous section?

19 Benefits for PH There would be benefits from all of the options. Depending on the option, these would include: Leadership development – our leaders would get experience quicker and therefore develop quickly – a benefit for our staff too Improve leadership of teaching & learning Staff retention – lots of varied opportunities for talented people Different ideas from other’s practice – Graham – Solihull Challenge to within school variation – see PHPS through different eyes CPD – more systematic & effective As a school – PH would have greater capacity for sustaining improvement & maintaining grade 1
