5 WHAT MAKES A GOOD PARAGRAPH? 1)Topic Sentence or Power Sentence 2)Supporting/detail sentences (2-3 per paragraph) 3)Concluding or Closing Sentence

6 The topic sentence needs to be exciting and well written, so the reader will WANT to read more -The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph -The topic sentence is a summary of the main idea of your paragraph -The topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph will be about -The topic sentence gives the reader clues as to what to expect -The topic sentence can state the purpose of a paragraph Topic Sentence/Power Sentence

7 Organize with Sections Detailed or Supporting Sentences - Should be three or more supporting sentences within a paragraph -Sentences that provide examples or information that relate back to the topic of the paragraph -Think “Evidence” or “Support”

10 Example of Supporting Sentences The tiger can be easily recognized by its orange fur coat with dark, black stripes. The enormous tiger cat can weigh up to 720 pounds. Tigers can be as long as six feet.

11 Closing Sentence The massive orange and black mammal known as the tiger generally hunts alone, and is able to bring down prey such as deer and antelope.
