Bone Marrow Donation

What is Bone marrow?  flexible spongy tissue in the interior of bones such as your hip and thigh.  constitutes 4% of the total body mass

Types of bone marrow  red marrow-hematopoietic tissue produces approximately 500 billion blood cells per day  yellow marrow-fat cells.

Red marrow  At birth, all bone marrow is red. Only around half of adult bone marrow is red.  mainly in the flat bones- pelvis, sternum, cranium, ribs, vertebrae and scapulae  In cases of severe blood loss, the body can convert yellow marrow back to red marrow to increase blood cell production.

What is Bone marrow transplant?  A bone marrow transplant is a procedure to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.  hematopoietic stem cells are removed from a person and infused into another person (allogenic) or into the same person at a later time (autologous)

Reason for transplant.  Treat severe bone marrow diseases including cancer  Congenital defects.  Autoimmune diseases or malignancies.

Methods to donate  Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) Donation  Bone Marrow Donation

PBSC  In 75% of cases your blood is drawn via a sterile needle in one arm and passed through a machine that filters out the blood stem cells and then returns the rest of your blood back to your body through the other arm.

Bone Marrow Donation  In 25% of cases -when the patient is a child  outpatient surgical procedure  The procedure generally takes1-2 hours.

Umbilical cord donation  Umbilical cord blood, which is typically thrown away, is rich with the blood- forming cells that can give blood cancer patients hope for a cure. Donating your baby’s cord blood to a public cord blood bank can help patients get the transplants they need.

Organizations and websites  National Marrow Donor Program, (NMDP) http://bethematch.org/  www.deletebloodcancer.org www.deletebloodcancer.org  Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, an American bone marrow transplantation registry

Bone marrow statistics  This year, at least 130,000 Americans will be diagnosed with a serious blood disease.  Leukemia will strike 44,000 Americans this year, including 3,500 children.  Only 30 percent of patients who need a bone marrow transplant have a matching donor in their families.  Only 2 percent of population is on the national registry.

Statistics

Odds  Almost 1000 people die every year.  80% of the time African Americans find only one match.  Multi-Racial face the worst odds of finding a match.

Ways to help.  If you are ineligible to register, there are plenty of other ways to help us save lives:  Host a donor drive --- Host a donor drive  Raise Money --- Raise Money  Spread the word Spread the word
