2 Georgia 5-STAR Overview Georgia SHAPE Initiative Purpose: to recognize and award birthing hospitals for implementing evidence-based maternity care practices that promote and support breastfeeding One star is awarded for every two steps implemented of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as defined by WHO and Baby- Friendly USA

12 WIC Support WIC plays an important role as an advocate and resource for breastfeeding promotion and support. Offers assistance to local hospitals with lactation training for staff. Creates referral communication with hospitals to coordinate post discharge lactation support for mothers. Celebrates and recognize hospitals that have earned the Baby Friendly designation
