3 Welcome and Introductions Dr. Dmitriy Voloshin - Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning Edwin Manson - Principal, Coach, Teacher Individual introductions Find a partner Ask him or her to identify three desired or expected outcomes from participating in the academy What do you hope to gain from this experience? Introduce your partner and share their expected or desired outcomes with the group

4 Purpose of the Academy WUSD Strategic Priority Personnel: Recruit / Retain / Sustain for a Culture of High Expectations What is Our Purpose? Consider the individual expectations that were shared with the group: What is the common thread? How does it align with the district’s Personnel Strategic Priority? Formulate and record the purpose for the Academy

5 Group Norms What are our non-negotiables? Consider what is important for you and this group Consider the following examples: Be present and engaged Maintain confidentiality Listen to Understand “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” (Stephen R. Covey) As a group, identify and record three norms We will hold each other accountable to these norms

6 Break – 5 minutes Dinner in 30 minutes

7 Personal Project This is the centerpiece of this academy Identify and record in your journal one key project (initiative) that you will work on and complete this semester (10 minutes) Consider the following: How will completing this project help you develop as an instructional leader? What impact will this project have on increasing academic performance of all students including English learners? How will you monitor your progress? Group discussion and reporting out (10 minutes) Determine next steps (10 minutes)

8 Working Dinner Objective: Create a memo for perspective employees (new teachers) “selling” them on our district Form three teams that will narrate their assigned topics in Google Docs (30 min) Team A: An opening statement and an introductory section about our district, its schools, and educational programs that we offer Team B: Teacher support section discussing how we support new and existing teachers and what professional growth opportunities are available to our teachers Team C: Community of West Sacramento – what it is like to live and work here and a closing statement In your teams, discuss your assigned sections (no writing)

9 Group Project What sets WUSD apart? Objective: Create a memo for perspective employees (new teachers) “selling” them on our district In your teams, create assigned sections in Google Docs (30 min) Team A: An opening statement and an introductory section about our district, its schools, and educational programs that we offer Team B: Teacher support section discussing how we support new and existing teachers and what professional growth opportunities are available to our teachers Team C: Community of West Sacramento – what it is like to live and work here and a closing statement Present individual sections to the whole group – discuss and edit (10 minutes) Team A will invite Teams B and C to paste their edited sections into their document, and create a final memo to perspective employees (5 minutes)

10 For the Next Meeting Share your Personal Project with your administrator and get his or her input and buy-in Read Foreword, Preface, Introduction, and Chapter 1 of Becoming A Strong Instructional Leader Schedule times to collaborate in person with another Academy participant on completing your project (1 hour minimum) Contact Connie to schedule a one-on-one coaching session with Edwin Manson before the next meeting to discuss your project
